Got in late from prior commitments tonight and couldn't watch the game even if it was on, but I find it a travesty that this game wasn't broadcast locally. I mean, your home opener isn't on local TV? I'd think the head hanchos at Comcast could throw their weight around and bully ESPN in this case. Let's see, the two Philly stations showed a goof ball NFL fantasy show and the world wide sports of POKER. WTF!! This is an epic joke by those in charge! Eff Gary Buttman!

wrt television contracts both the NHL and ESPN are terrible

Tony D killing penalties as well. That should be worth while watching in the future to see how that shakes out.
- furio16

I thought Tony D did well last night, not perfect by any means, but made some really good defensive plays and was very good on the PP.

Why? …in a sad, people are dumb kind of way? He is injured. If not injured, he would be out there playing in a Flyer’s sweater, looking like exactly what we have needed these last few years on defense.
- NC Flyers Fan

I think it is funny is why. People are tired of the sneakiness and lack info being provided by the team and the player.

I don't think so. Both goal against should have been stopped by Hart IMO.
- jd250

On a 35-save night without a warm up game, I think he was good. Gave the team an opportunity to win on a night they were playing too much defense.

Their communication has been crappy. I really think the organization could have done a much better job there. That is true. However, I have no doubts that Ellis is injured and would be playing otherwise.

- Tomahawk

i don't think anyone hates frost, i myself just want more from him. Last night was nice, but game one. he needs to do more of that on a consistent basis. we'll see at the end of the year as this is a make or break season for him. but game one of the season....not using one basket.

I'll give you the first goal. I don't agree on the second goal. It was a good snipe through traffic.

While I think you are a bit off base in your disdain for Giroux I don't think you are entirely off base. The Flyers played a very soft game while he and Voracek were the faces of the franchise. If they somehow play much tougher this season I will be even more skeptical of Giroux. They have had a country club atmosphere for years under several different coaches. Giroux only wanted to go to Florida when he was traded. Then he takes the money and runs to play in his hometown of Ottawa. If he REALLY wanted to win a Cup why would he sign in Ottawa? They are a young and improving team, but they ain't winning a Cup before he retires. Hmmmmmm.......
- Phillywhiteout

i wouldnt;'t say g played a heavy game, but wouldn't say he was a soft player either. Jake maybe...not g

From the Hockey Writers from a Devil's perspective:

Ruff played his best players in the third period when he had to last night, but that was because the team was trailing. The results were encouraging, as the Devils generated some of their better chances in the final frame. But through the first two periods, their five-on-five offense was largely missing. Most of their shots came from the perimeter, and by the time their offense got things going, it was too little too late.

It was a good snipe but if Hart is not on his knees he might have been able to move to the post and get that. I am critiquing Hart's technique more than anything else.

That was kind of funny in a way. I sometimes wonder when injuries are undisclosed if it is to protect a player with an injury location that could be easily targeted or if it is hard to classify it as upper or lower when it is just mid, and they don’t want to be wrong about which they say.

This is just not true! The Flyers had the clear 5 on 5 edge in the 1st period and big in portions of the 2nd and 3rd periods. The Devils had a good push near the end of the 2nd after they got down 3-1, and again the latter part of the 3rd once they got down 4-1, and especially after they pulled their goalie. But 5 on 5 the Flyers IMO were the better team for long stretches of the game.
- jd250

First period, shot attempts 15-10 Devils, scoring chances 9-5 Devils and High danger chances 3-2.
They didn't have an edge in the 2nd or 3rd either. In the 2nd period, shot attempts were 25-11 Devils. Scoring chances 14-6 Devils. High danger chances 5-1 Devils. In the 3rd , shot attempts were 24-7 Devils, scoring chances 13-3 Devils with high danger chances 4-0 in favor of the Devils.

Now in the 3rd period of a game when one team has a significant lead, score effects come into being a factor, but with the clear difference through the entire game, I wouldn't look at that as a reason.

You can put your head in the sand and pretend it's not the case. One game is not a trend but that is not the way you want to play for long term success.

The same thing happened last year in the early season. Flyers outscored their deficiencies for a short period. The Atkinson line was hot early then it all fell apart.

The Flyers won last night because Blackwood had a really poor game.

As a Super big Torts fan... I watched the game with interest ... because I really wanted him as Ducks coach...

Loved that Torts recognized the sold play of the kids, not shying away from playing them in critical spots, especially with that 2 goal lead with what less than 5 minutes left, after the Devils pulled the goalie for the extra man,

Torts rolls out Allison, Cates, Frost and Laczynski on the ice, and Frost scored right after that... Love Torts.. He's gonna play those kids..

I didn’t ask how many tickets radio stations gave away. I asked how full the building looked to a person who was actually there, preferably a person who isn’t employed by the team.
- Shrike

I went to the game, as the kid I played tennis with had great seats (right where Scoob likes to sit: just off red line, few rows up, perfect!), and it was free (maybe he felt bad for making me run around and badly twist my ankle couple of weeks ago).

In any event, building was packed. When they announced attendance, it was 19k+. I don't remember how much. Crowd was loud, tremendous. buzz. Big cheers for Torts, big cheer whenever Gritty was shown. On the subway, lots of young kids chanting "lets go Flyers"

More obs when I get through the endless sequence of zoom calls.

Well Ellis gets the last laugh when he collects the $31 mil left on his contract. I just can’t feel sorry for him.

What do you care what CG does? Why would you celebrate someone’s failure that otherwise proved to be a solid player?
In actuality it says more about you.

I think it is fair to not feel sorry for him as he is paid well. That is very different from booing him or laughing at him because he is injured.

Atkinson is a forward. Just wanted to point that out.

Blackwood is a goalie. For those of you playing along at home
