I've actually noticed Zucker-Malkin-Rust getting some Dumo-Tang deployment in the games. Sully has been trying both top 4 pairs with both top 6 lines. At one point in the 3rd last night I heard Errey saying that Tanger was 3rd in ice time for D-man on the Pens...not sure if that stuck until end of game, or not, but that is still so rare to hear hahah

Yup...fun games coming this week...and sleepy mornings for me...

Have the Pens ever had this western trip this early in a season? If so, its been rare.

Tending has been excellent from both guys so far this year. Really nice to see.

Petry looked good after an poor showing in MTL. I didn't realize he had such a bomb from the point. Good shot that goalies have trouble handling cleanly.

Rusty Geno and Zuck really have played well together. It's nice to see 1-2 come in waves and give the other team something to think about when it comes to matchups.

McGinn has probably been the least noticeable player in what I've seen so far this year. Nothing about his play has stood out.

McGinn has definitely been far more vanilla than he was billed. I hope Hextall is willing to use him for salary matching purposes at the deadline.

If this season keeps going the way it’s going I think this team will once again force Hextal’s hand to make a big move at the deadline like last year. If Kapanen is actually good now (big if) we actually are really close to having scoring depth through all of our lines. If we could find a way to get one more top six forward, we could maybe sneak into the Cup dark horse category.

That’s all assuming that this season continues its trajectory and we don’t fizzle out, which is a big if given the age of everyone on the roster. Guys will start to lose their legs eventually probably.

Hex is going to have to pull off some next level wizardry to add a top 6 at the deadline with our cap situation. We might not have the space to add a 4th line plug.

Dollar in dollar out deal is tough, have to hope that rumor of next year's cap raise comes true. Even still, you might pay more for the cap space than you do for the player right now, and we are not rich in premium assets.

It’ll be hard but we do have expendable salary. We’re a year removed from the McGinn signing and he’s done (frank) all. I really don’t think he’s untouchable. $2.75 mil isn’t a whole lot but it’s a starting point for someone making around $5 mil when you factor in salary retention

Who would want McGinn? Really how much do you have to pay someone to take him? Nobody wants to add years for a guy they don't need.

Salary retention would be a good idea, just hard to move any salary. More likely, you'd have to trade someone like Blueger who is on an expiring contract and somewhat desirable.

EDIT if we're lucky and he's who you want to replace, maybe somebody takes Kapanen. Zucker would be an option if he's injured or play falls off.

So who's excited to potentially see Chad Ruhwedel play forward in game 5 because our cap situation is so screwed up!

I mean teams send salary the other way in trades all the time. A rebuilding team trading a top forward won't give a poop about absorbing McGinn if they want what we're offering.

Basically if any team decides they like POJ we can make it happen one way or another

Teams take on expiring contracts all the time to match salaries. They don't take players with two years left without incentive. And even then few teams plan to suck two years from now.

They might find a way, but they'll need to be more creative then just take Brock McGinn. Teams aren't picking him up as a favor to get POJ, and if they are, we don't want to trade him.

It’s not a favor. If a team wants a package that we’re offering, they’ll have to take Brock McGinn to facilitate the trade. You can argue that we don’t have anything appealing and I probably agree with that, but if a team decides they really want Joseph and a first and they’re rebuilding there’s really no reason why they wouldn’t take Brock McGinn.

So long as POJ and the first is considered an overpay for the wing, then I'd agree. Only point is you are paying extra to get Brock McGinn included. And that with a 3 year contract you limit the teams that will make that trade because not everyone selling is rebuilding.

So can it be done. Yes but wizard level stuff.

Yep, game 5 and we're forced to pay 7 defensemen because we don't have the cap space to call up a 13th forward. Sucks for anyone in WBS hoping to earn their way to Pittsburgh.

And just to throw another obstacle.

The Pens reportedly tried to trade POJ but couldn't get any takers. If somebody wants him, that means he's succeeding as an NHL defenseman on a cheap contract. If that's the case, why would you trade him. Same for Poulin or Smith, if someone wants him for a top 6 forward, he should probably be on your roster.

Point being besides Pickering and maybe Blomqvist, we don't have a prospect that makes sense. Which to be fair you stated.

I think the more reasonable scenario is you include Blueger as your cap dump since he wouldn't require a sweetener.
