Hank Balling: Sabres Game Night Open Thread

Hi

Well put, Hank. Though many will not be able to focus, the Sabres must carry the shield of the city once again as they did while we recovered from the blizzard. No doubt they are aware the city needs them tonight.

The simple fact is we need this game for a playoff race that has already begun. The Capitals aren't going to offer us a sympathy goal, and we saw what a slow start will do last game against Ottawa. The team needs to be ready. This is where Don Granato, Kevyn Adams, and the leadership group need to step up like they did against Detroit.

UPL, keep on keepin on.

Thanks. I'll be honest: the Hamlin injury really threw me today. There have been a couple times where I've found myself really upset by the whole thing.

The intrusion of real-life peril into sports is a terrifying occurrence. We all want a hint of gladiatorial danger from our sports without the worst ramifications and repercussions.

Just very sad overall.

There was a moment last night where I thought we watched a man die on live television for our entertainment. That doesn't look like the case now, thank God. Really puts things in perspective, though.

Just spoke with Damar Hamlin’s uncle. Damar was originally on 100% oxygen and is now down to 50%. Says the family is hanging in there. He thanked Bills fans, and Bengals fans and asked for continued prayers

shortly. He was watching the game from the family’s hometown, Pittsburgh. As soon as the family watched, they drove down to Cincinnati.

Glenn said his nephew had to be resuscitated twice. Once on the field at Paycor Stadium, once after he arrived at the hospital. There is a concern of lung damage, Glenn said.

There was no "thumbs up" from the gurney on this one, nor an update from the ambulance. No resolution.

Edit: probably should have used the word "stretcher" instead of "gurney." I'm all out of sorts. Watching the game now. Have a good night, everyone

As a way to move topics, does anyone have an Ovechkin story? Years ago I was a Customs and Border Protection officer here in Buffalo, and I was lucky enough to work a year at Prior Aviation where all of the NHL teams fly into and out of. OV happens to be the only non-Sabre jersey I've purchased and the only player I've ever asked for an autograph. He was gracious and signed the jersey 2009 or 10.

Years later my nephew is quite the young hockey player but grew up in the worst era of Sabre history; consequently, he's an OV and Capitals fan. Two years ago his Christmas gift was the OV jersey. He went bonkers.

Sabres jerseys seen so far: Lots of Eichel, Kalinin, Myers, LaFontaine (mine), DEL Peterka (my brother).
