Here's the thing certain people don't get. The people who think everyone is soft and woke and all those other buzz words that they are being told to resent are actually the ones who are triggered the most. They do not understand that freedom of speech/expression is not freedom from reaction or consequences or being yelled at on twitter. Someone like Provorov gets yelled at online and all those people clutch their pearls and get uppity about the same thing that they are themselves doing, but over a much dumber thing. It's just a circle jerk of outrage.
The precipitating act (provorov and his blind loyalty to a magical wizard in the sky's supposed hatred of certain people) is almost irrelevant at this point - picklerick
Problem is, people don't leave their echo chambers and refuse to have a conversation with someone who has differing views.
Pretty much. "But we cover hockey and he's a good hockey player!"
I'm in no way a Trump guy, but it's pretty funny to me that any athlete that voiced support for him was immediately vilified, but the guy that pals around with and supports Putin is OK. - eichiefs9
There's an easy explanation for that. Doesn't mean it's right or wrong, just that it is the reason. Far less Americans know who Alex Ovechkin or any of the other Russian players who may overtly support Putin are, or even hear about their support for him. Every American knows who Trump is, and 65% (or thereabouts depending on the poll) of them think Trump is a colossal moron at best. So any public figure (nhl player or otherwise) who supports him is gonna get signal boosted by the media and/or social media.

I also think Ovechkin is such a big figure back home that he may feel compelled to be pro Putin. This could be due to fear that his family/friends could face consequences if he wasn't. He also might actually like Putin which would suck.
I try not to think about Ovechkin outside of hockey because he is one of my favorite all time players.

Yes and no. We were taught that all opinions are valid or equal or deserve equal consideration because they are just another way of looking at things. Not every opinion is valid or equal when the "opinion" is based on an alternate reality. You can't negotiate or argue with someone who lives in a literal different reality. That's the biggest cause of the breakdown in communication in our society. The end
On a private level you can disregard lgbtq but your employer the NHL & Philadelphia Flyers want to represent the movement as part of your job. it sucks but he will end up losing that battle even though his heart is in the right place

What are you talking about? What battle is he losing... He didn't wear the jersey. He is not losing his job. End of story

The earth is flat people are even more bizarre than the Scientology people. Maybe they’re in cahoots - Slimtj100
I don't know man.
People still believe that crap after L. Ron Hubbard died.
But yeah, they're both idiots.
Wish I knew a flat-earther, I'd love to see what makes someone believe that crap. I knew a Q-tard, that was fun. Her boyfriend would get pissed when I asked for more.
Yeah, I don't know man. I also have some friends that have surprisingly changed their tune on Russia since they view being against the Russian war machine as being pro democrat or some poop. Lots of mental gymnastics there. - JRR1285

Scientology kills people and exerts actual power and influence over stuff. It's all the things nutjob conspiracy theorists want there to be in the world to give their lives meaning, but somehow they ignore it
flat earthers are real dumb but relatively harmless

Not saying their ideas or opinions are valid, I like to try to understand where someone is coming from and why. Problem is people with extreme ideologies won't have a rational discussion, they just wait for the other person to stop talking so they can continue where they left off.
I've got lots of crazy quirks myself, but I will always listen to another point of view.
Can I send you some fresh adrenochrome?
Ok what's the craziest conspiracy theory everyone on here believes, or wants to believe? This only works if we all agree 99% of conspiracy theories are dumb and insane and this is just a fun exercise.

The thing I have an issue with is that nobody is suggesting that Ovechkin needs to stand in front of the Reflecting Pool at the Capitol and openly criticize/denounce Putin.
Not "going after you" on this, for the record....but the argument of the safety of his family/friends back home is easily debunked.
For one, Putin has been openly criticized by a Russian poet/actress and she and her family seem perfectly fine, as far as anyone knows.
And the main point, bringing it back to my initial comment, is not that Ovechkin doesn't publicly trash Putin. It's that he openly and actively supports him. He created "PutinTeam" in support of him for the 2018 Russian presidential "election". His Instagram profile picture is still him and Putin. He's not exactly hiding his blatant support for the guy. Had he just kept his mouth shut and his support private it wouldn't even be a conversation.
