Do we know if the salary retention is for next year only or the remaining of Hayes contract? I haven’t seen anything about that yet. |

Retention isn't variable, it's same every year.

The issue is that Tortorella isn't going to be around when they are competitive again. So why is he allowed to have any influence on this team whatsoever?
Time to make the right deals from a position of strength is a luxury Danny Briere needs to rebuild the right way. Tortorella saying certain players are so toxic that they can't be around for a minute longer puts them at a disadvantage. - StepfordSam
If you separate it, we moved an aging player at a high salary out for a 6th round pick. Not awful for the rebuild. We have an extra pick (6th round 2024 not great) and some cap relief.
The fact that it looks like we are placating Torts, who, I agree will not be around for the long haul, and the fact that he publicly blasted Hayes most of the season, cost us a higher return. I have no doubt. Hayes was coming off an all-star season and you could blame his production and play on a bad team alongside him.
Same old Torts. Always whining and complaining about something. He's just learned how to work with the media a little better and pander to the fan base.

It's funny that this is just a Torts things? Maybe Briere has a plan and Hayes is not part of it. He wanted to move on and was able to open 3.57 that maybe goes to an RFA.
I get Torts and Hayes weren't on same page but I am sure Danny also has his plan |

I doubt Torts will be here when the big "winning" starts. - THE EVIL WITHIN
Well, that could be awhile. Since they are not finished stripping it down to the chassis. This could be a very ugly opening night roster. A ton of this picks have to succeed to avoid a permanent nomansland. |

Very good move by St. Louis, they get a 45-55 point top6-9 forward @3.5m for a 6th.
I'm sure Hayes will do well on the Blues, but sometimes to have to eat poop to fix a mistake. - Glak18
Great move by STL. Hayes at $3.5. |

I am fine with Hayes being gone. Hopefully they use the additional cap space to gain additional assets. Give Hayes' minutes to a youngster.
The Johansen and Hall trades really did not help the Flyers. |

You have an issue with Kevin Hayes being jettisoned from the team? Even if it was at Torts request, I’m totally fine with it - ClaudeFather
Yeah good move. Cut the loss and reset. There are more moves that need to be made but this is a start. |

Danny no question caved in on the pressure, but hopefully this move is used for relations and isn't a sign that he can be taken advantage of.
Patrick Brown went for a 6th
MacEwen got a 5th and Lemiuex
Hayes must of poop in someone's coffee.

I can’t stand Hayes, but if Torts wasn’t such a childish, arrogant POS and hadn’t trashed his value, they probably get a better return with 50% retained.
The sooner he’s gone, the better. Someone go get his horse. |

Oh well.
Anyway, what is up with Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review putting McDavid 5th in the Hart ballot?
That guy has some 'splainin' to do.
Also, as a complete aside...That Boston College team is going to be a hell of a lot of fun to watch next season. I may take a trip up there just to watch them.

Flyers didn’t have to buy out Hayes. Didn’t have to give up any assets to clear a contract and over 3.5 in cap space. The more cap space the better. In the meantime, maybe it’s the flyers who will be getting assets for other teams cap management issues. |

yep, blues got a great deal. Danny should have told the man child to make it work. If not then he will find a coach who will. - hello it's me 2050
He is a complimentary player that is paid like a top level player. Give his minutes to a developing player. I am good with this deal. |

Very easy to believe, actually. The return on Johansen was nothing.
https://theathletic.com/4...ansen-krug-dubois-lebrun/
When the Predators made it known that they would eat 50 percent of Ryan Johansen’s remaining contract, they actually had a few teams nibbling over the past two to three weeks.
That culminated in the 30-year-old center being shipped to Colorado on Saturday, but it’s a deal that again hammers home the point of how difficult it is to move money in Year 3 of a more or less frozen cap environment.
Think back to Max Pacioretty going to Carolina for free last summer in a trade, or more recently the Kings’ three-team trade to get Cal Petersen’s contract off the books. It’s been crazy hard to move money.
“There’s no money in the system, ” Predators general manager Barry Trotz told The Athletic over the phone Sunday afternoon. “So I wanted to make sure I got money in the system”
In other words, creating $4 million of cap room for the next two years was worth it for the Predators even though it meant $4 million in dead cap space by retaining half of Johansen’s $8 million cap hit. It’s not about spending that cap money now. It’s more of projecting out as the new GM continues to tweak this roster in his reset of the organization.
“I’m projecting out,” Trotz said. “I’m in a different window.”

I almost think I would rather they have kept him for another year and tried again next offseason or at the deadline. Now they have a retention slot for three more seasons.
Oh well.
A 6th round pick is meh at best IMO. For 50% retention........
I get the feeling Torts was of the frame of mind to just get him out of here, I don't care what we get. Addition by subtraction or whatever, and Briere felt like he was backed in to a corner. - MBFlyerfan
Torts is obviously running this ship. They’re going to do the same with deangelo. Reports are flyers want to wash their hands at whatever the cost. I hate that the flyers are putting themselves in a disadvantage with these guys because of torts

Hayes is better on a veteran team. I do not like the thought of hayes around the young kids. Im ok with it, wouldve preferred less retained. Guessing Tony is playing here all year, or bought out. Do not want to retain for him for year. Now lets move TK, Sanheim, laughts, and anyone else before the draft and get some picks in return.

Should show everyone what Hayes value at that contract actually is. GMDB has begun cleaning up Fletchers mess which is step one of the rebuild. |

I hear ya but another season of Hayes wasn't going to significantly increase his value.
This was just ripping the band aid off and being done with it. |

No they did not. Flyers currently have 8 open roster spots though, do they have enough youngsters, at the needed positions, deserving of playing time in the AHL to fill them? If Sanheim and Konecny go that could get even more glaring.
Half the board gets up in arms about rushing youngsters to soon and the other half about them being blocked from playing. How do you determine the balance? Some vets will be needed.
