The league has changed. Being the best defenseman isn't about patrolling the blueline or clearing the crease or playing on the PK anymore. The game is about puck movement, transition and driving play nowadays. That's what the best defenseman do and Karlsson was the best at that this season.

Yes, They did. Some averaged more ice time. All gave their team a chance to make the playoffs. I do my own thinking. The NHL makes a lot of poor decisions and changing what is viewed as the best defenseman in the league is one of their all time poor decisions.

I mean Hamilton with a +23, 82 games played, 74 points and 22 goals. How was he not really talked about? He also had more GWG and PPG while playing a little less than Karlsson on the pp. Similar blocked shots, more hits AND less time on ice. More deserving than Karlsson.

The two guys who were nominated this year both already won the cup. Both kill a heavy amount of penalties and see plenty of defensive situations. Karlsson doesn’t kill any penalties. Just think of how much offense Fox (2021 winner) and Makar (2022 winner) sacrifice by playing actual defense?
