The entire HNL is based on cronyism. EVERY TEAM does basically the same thing. Bill even had a post about this previously.

The Flyers do it more than any other team. Their last four hires were all former Flyer players.

DeBrincat and TK seems to be linked heading into the draft. When one finally gets traded, the framework of the trade for the other is in place. I do believe the rumors both DET and MTL are looking for young, scoring forwards.

It's frightening that there is basically one outsider and that is Tortorella.

To a certain extent but nowhere near the level that the Flyers do.

I feel like cronyism is a very human thing. Most people stick with the folks they know. Most of the jobs I got in my life were a result of it to different extents.

I believe that also but I have a hard time believing that they're willing to trade a top 10 pick to get one.

Two different situations entirely. Maybe targeting players of similar caliber, but I don’t think compensation is tied to each other

Interesting he’s been so quiet after not being able to keep his mouth shut daily during the season.

Was that just his “get Fletcher fired” campaign and now that Briere is the guy he doesn’t have to be the mouth piece?

I'm not recalling what you're referring to.

When they stashed Pete Peters and (?? I forget the other player) with Vancouver prior to the June 30 deadline only to trade back for them a couple of weeks later. Bill actually wrote about this in a post a day or 2 ago. That scenario was why they created the rule that scuttled the TDA trade to CAR.

He just doesn't have a mic in his face right now. He is a narcissist starved for attention. No doubt in the future he will be rocking the boat and making his feelings known and seeking conflict.

If they are retaining on Hayes, Angelo and a rental like Walker this season, then they could possibly get a bigger haul for TK by trading him in 2024-25 with retention.
- Feanor

You think a retained Konecny for one season gets more than two seasons of Konecny? I do not.

Roster spots should be open for younger players and not taken up by a stiff that can't play.
- MJL

what younger players?

Actually I believe TK has more value then DeBrincat. TK is under control for 2 more years at a lower cap hit then the new contract DeBrincat he will sign after he is traded.

That happened years ago. Retained salary transactions, which is where the rule applies was only introduced recently. Wasn't that deal about hiding players from the expansion draft?

If you're trading for a player like DeBrincat, it's because you want him long term. Getting him under contract now on a max term deal will result in cap savings down the line versus having to re-sign Konecny in two years where if he plays well, salaries are escalated higher. Konecny would also be an expiring UFA versus DeBrincat being an RFA. DeBrincat is a two- time 40 goal scorer.

I'll admit my memory is fuzzy on this, but I think the whole concept of making a trade before the deadline and then reversing the trade post deadline (which is the rationale behind the 1 year wait) was why the rule was put in place. The Flyers got away with it because they exploited a loophole.

So by your logic you believe DeBrincat if traded, will get a higher return. I disagree, but I hope both do get traded by Thursday to find out.

I’m not sure what the rights to Debrincat will be, obviously anyone getting him will be going long term. TK is a great asset at his cap hit and two years remaining. Just two different scenarios

Nothing to do with the trade deadline. Players acquired after the deadline are not eligible for the playoffs. It was about hiding players from the waiver draft.

My logic is simple. DeBrincat is a better player and teams acquiring him as a 25 year old player are likely going to want to sign him long term. Why acquire him for a short period of time? They want the security of having him signed long term and cost controlled.

I'm very aware of what your thought procrss. If both players are traded before Thursday, I believe TK will yield the better return. I could be right, could be wrong. Hope to find out.

Depends on the other team's cap situation. Not every contender has $5.5m in space, especially at the start of a new season.

It was Keith Acton and Pete Peeters that Bob Clarke stashed in Winnipeg for a few days then got them back. This was so they weren't picked up on the old waiver wire.
