This was the worst possible outcome and the Flyers lose a valuable salary retention slot. He is still a viable player, he's just not one that Torts wanted to coach. - Flyers_01

The league didn’t think he was that valuable a player at a $3.6 caphit for 3 years or do you think Briere passed up a better return?

Worst possible outcome would have been hayes getting slower and slower on the ice. With the cap rumored to go up in the next couple of seasons I think this is a good trade. Makes room for a young kid to come up and play.
The team will be poopty, let them trade al the older players away. I am hoping Atkinson is gone by the trade deadline.

Playing on one of the worst teams in the league, 25 minutes a night, what should his plus minus have been? - ClaudeFather
Nothing he’s ever done in his career translates to winning. He’s the best offensive player in a defensive category. I already listed where he should have stronger stats as a defenseman.

That's a bit of hyperbole, don't you think? They could have given up picks to get him to leave.
The upside is it opens a spot for a young player and removes a distraction.
I don't think it's a great trade, but we're going to be eating some turds to fix this roster.

There wasn't going to be a deal where the Flyers didn't take something on the chin.

Who do you trust more defensively? - SuperSchennBros
He brought a senators team to what, game 7 of the eastern conference finals. You do know that one player doesn’t make a team correct? Offense is also apart of playing the D position

I'm thinking you keep him if you don't get a better return. It's not like he can't play. Maybe a better deal comes along at the TDL or the draft next year.
Half the teams are capped out right now. Everyone talks about the cap going up significantly next year. If teams have more breathing room then his value changes.
If you feel he had to go, right now, no matter the return, then ok but I think they should've held onto him instead of selling at his lowest point.

I almost think I would rather they have kept him for another year and tried again next offseason or at the deadline. Now they have a retention slot for three more seasons.
Oh well.
A 6th round pick is meh at best IMO. For 50% retention........
I get the feeling Torts was of the frame of mind to just get him out of here, I don't care what we get. Addition by subtraction or whatever, and Briere felt like he was backed in to a corner.

Whatever you think of him, this is one of the best sauces in history.

The situation was untenable, keeping him was impossible.
Have not spent much time, but I wonder out of York, Cates, and Frost- does anyone get a multi yr deal. I would like to see York get a multi yr deal. He could be a great value 2nd pair Dman for many years.
$7M+ off the books. Now go weaponize that cap space Danny! - Tomahawk
I hope DB is looking at overpriced minute-eating defensemen on expiring deals to bring in for this season. I have no idea who would fit that bill, but that's what I would be looking at. Pick up an asset to take on such a player.
I don't want to go into the season in a position where the team is forced to play (or over-play) the defensive prospects. I'm not saying that I'm against playing the young guys. If they're the best players at camp, and seem NHL ready, then by all means play em. Just hope to see 1 or 2 vets brought in so the team isn't forced to play guys that may not be ready.
