Leafs drafting looks pretty good considering how few picks they've had to work with. Some decent prospects still.
Robertson
Knies
Steeves
Niemela
Voit
Minten
Woll
Two of which will be impact players on the team next year. Maybe three. Having a graduating class on the cheap is a good thing. - UsernameUnknown
Also, Nikita Grebenkin/Grebyonkin.
And once Rodion Amirov finishes beating the poop out of his brain cancer, him too. |

If the league has revenue sharing to create “parity”, shouldn’t cap hits be after tax dollars? Because it’s not really parity, is it? - .HOHO.
Seems like a no brainer to me, not sure why they don’t do that?? Anyone? |

That makes entirely too much sense, so the NHL will obviously never do it. |

A+. This is an issue that needs to be explored more deeply by the NHL Board of Governors.
Teams earning superior revenue see their cash flow being redistributed to lower revenue, especially southern markets. Teams located in southern states with no personal income tax are able to offer players more attractive financial packages using the money they have gained from revenue sharing.
Player agents don't want this fixed because it serves to constantly drive salaries upwards.
I don't think the NHL will find a solution to the issue. But, there is a solution for the Canadian teams and that would involve allowing players to spread their best 10 years of earnings over a 30 year period for income tax purposes. Remember the average length of an NHL career is around 6 years. |

Dubas left this team screwed for years to come. I like Tree but he was left an absolute mess and it seems Shanahan is making the calls and the manager just doing his bidding. Might have to shop for an Ottawa jersey, best future in Canadian teams. |

No clue.
Klingberg got 7 million last year. It's 4 million this year. Minnesota, leafs and other teams wanted him last year. I think he'll be fine. If not, oh well, one year. Leafs won one round without him so what are you scared of here? - Aaron_85
There it is. The word that is the equivalent of 😬. It gets used all the time in here. 😬. Our management is so 😬. |

Wow that was epic levels of failure today from Shanahan.
His new puppet got demolished by his former puppet with the Acciari and Graves deals in Pittsburgh.
Imagine winning one round in nearly 20 years and then following that up with...
Reaves at 1.35 for 3 years but didn't keep Schenn.
Klingberg at 4+ but didn't get Graves and let Gustavsson go for 800K.
Kampf at 2+ but didn't keep Acciari.
Still got Murray on the books. Still got a blueline that sucks ass. Still got no real depth in the bottom six forward group. Still no extension for their star players at a reasonable cap hit. Still didn't clear salary to balance the roster.
Absolutely horrible day for the Leafs. - Rare_Jewel
Dubas had more cap space to play with.
Feel better after that whine of yours.
There is work to be done. I will not dispute that.
Let's wait and see how the opening roster looks like before you proclaim the sky is falling.

Klingberg is atrocious defensively.
He was-25 in Dallas and -25 in Anaheim. It doesn't matter if the team he plays for is good or not, he is a giant liability defensively.
If he plays with Rielly at 5 on 5, the Leafs will get blown out in their own end.
Gustafsson definitely should have played more and even if it cost them 1 million to keep him, he's a better bargain than Klingberg at 4+ million. Could have kept Schenn and Gustafsson for less money, had the same offensive contribution and a RHD who can actually play playoff hockey and defend. - Rare_Jewel

All you can make are assumptions, as in the player’s decision, but it does not look good at all that ROR left when it’s reported that the Leafs were willing to go that AAV and term. That contract is super reasonable. What did ROR not like? Spoiled kids? Really tough start imo for the Treliving era. With Klingberg signed and Sammy still out there, I don’t see how this team gets better than last year, at least on paper. |

I agree that Dufas left a mess but I don’t believe Shanny is calling the shots. Trees is methodically going about his business. It will unfold in time. We have no clue on all the things he’s working on. |

Seems like the only options left will require dramatic change/s.
ROR was supposedly a leader…so lead. Maybe he left because he’d rather not have that pressure/responsibility placed on him as his career winds down.
It may have nothing to do with, “Problems in the dressing room” as rumoured now.
All indication pointed to this team being fairly close. |

Klingberg moves the needle about as much as Sheary.
Tampa and Toronto are two teams that haven't improved at all during free agency. If these teams keep this up, they'll have a guaranteed second-round matchup on the golf course.

Meh haven't won with them
Trade whoever, make this team more balanced.
Having 50 million tied up in 5 players is holding this team back. 4 of the 6 players we acquired that improved the team walked out the door for nothing. The type of players more assets will be wasted on to acquire at the deadline. We paid 4m (klinberg) for the the type of player that we could have resigned for 1m (Gus)
Still time for change and improvements but damn it doesn't look good so far.

There’s no way to implement that kind of thing without creating much more cap uncertainty for teams and players. Between federal, state/provincial and local taxes you’d have 32 different cap situations that potentially change every year as governments change their tax regimes. Even players on the same team face different tax burdens because of the different tax treaties between Canada, the US and other countries.
The tax problems are over-stated anyway since no players actually pay the posted tax rates. For example, most very likely defer a lot of their income (and taxes on it) until they retire when they can pay at a lower rate or in another jurisdiction.

Klingberg? Reaves? Keep going with these kind of decisions and a playoff spot will be a question. |
