Nah. Buddy is conveniently ignoring the main piece of the trade for the Leafs, who is still here and will be for a couple years. Lafferty was an extra.
- GreatGigInTheSky

Fair enough.

I think it's safe to say Jeannot will never live up to the cost.

With the way Reaves contract is structured it is not a 35 plus contract.

He can retire or other alternatives of getting out of the contract without a penalty.

Klingberg is 1 year.

On a day where we saw 6.25M going to an eventual 38 year old Killorn...be thankful so far.

The Killorn thing makes the Leafs moves look genius.

These are not connected.

Schenn got crazy money from a team with term. Leafs weren't doing that and it's good they didn't. As much as I wanted him back.

- GreatGigInTheSky

Yup, if Schenn could get that, more power to him.
No way I wanted the Leafs doing that though.

The Canadian tax thing I don't get...

One of my sisters and husband and 4 kids make about 550 a yr... live over in forest hill south and have no problem having a great life in Toronto taxes and all.
So I don't see how a single guy or even a family guy making over a mil and most times way way more have any concern at all with this tax issue that some are making it out to be.

It is probably a complete non factor to these guys..

- dozerD10

550 a year? like 550K?

I wonder what percentage of households make that (aside from the 90% of people on Hockeybuzz who will claim they make that)

Yeah, the Schenn thing is kinda like the Killorn thing. Fans would like to keep both, but they chased greener paychecks elsewhere.

Honestly, if I was a player, I'd rather Nashville over Anaheim.

No Duck or Angel lives in Anaheim... they all live in Newport... which is pretty sweet...

I honestly couldn't believe what Tampa gave up for him. It never made sense to me.

I wasn't happy with the 1st in the trade for McCabe, but at least he does his job very well and we got 50% retained.

Well we needed him... 27 G and 64 pts for 6+ is ok in my book. To long .. yep.. mil too much.. yep... but verbeek has history with both and likes them.. And he is a solid player on PK and 5 x 5.. and we need guys like that.

Plus with Silf and Rico off the books next yr.. that's 10 mil gone so no worries.

It's unfortunate that bad teams weaponized their CAP space this off-season. Lower level players getting bank because of it.

But on the other hand, maybe it's a good thing. Let them overpay and not us. Especially since the other teams also gave term with it.

I think I'd pick Anaheim.

I've never been out West but it's probably nicer. Also, for me personally, Anaheim has always been like my "second team". I also like their future more than Nashville's.

There are marked advantages financially and culturally to live in Nashville over Toronto. That is all.

Tennessee got nothing on Florida or California.

A small-town Florida six is a Memphis ten.

I wouldn't say complete non-factor, maybe less of a factor than its made out to be. It is still an area where the league promoting parity with a hard cap fails miserably. Until Bettman is gone, this is unlikely to change. While the NBA has gone from $49.5M in salary cap in 2005 to $136M currently, the NHL has gone from $39M to $83M in the same period. What was a $10M gap is now over $40M. It really has to do with growing the sport - which Bettman has failed to do. Disasters like keeping the Yotes afloat and not promoting and protecting star players are two possible reasons. The playoffs are less credible than professional wrestling. Star players mugged and its "playoff hockey".

Two more years of JT contract and he'll extend for 3m per year.
We al knew the last two years of his contract was gonna be an overpayment but we didnt care cause we thought the leafs would be able to accomplish something in the first 5. They havent, theyve failed every year. But the cap goes up 4 million next season, (matthews and maybe Nylander will eat that up) but its not that bad. Jt still producing at close to a ppg.

- Fakepartofme

This is a very good point.

JT has a style that should age like fine wine - his game has always been slower and more deliberate and he has been a consistent producer since Day 1.

I can definitely see him taking a "home town" discount to stay with the team - and still be effective - in his prime years.
