Playing center really limits what he can do on the forecheck, which is one of his biggest strengths as a player. - Feanor
On the forecheck and at the net. That's his strength offensively. I believe he has higher upside as a winger. I have doubts whether he will be good enough offensively for a top 6 spot. |

Well at least one prospect thought it was worth paying his own way :
8) Power forward prospect Devin Kaplan, who is coming off a strong freshman season at Boston University and will be at the USA Hockey World Junior Championships Showcase later this month, paid his own way to be eligible to attend the Flyers Development Camp again this year (as required by NCAA rules for a player tor attend a second Dev Camp with the same team). - Flyers_01
He's in a different situation. He's not a lottery pick who's a shoo-in for a contract and roster spot like Cutter. Kid's gotta put in every effort to get noticed.

What’s his ceiling as a winger? I don’t ever see him being an offensive juggernaut. He can be an elite defensive center on a third line that chips on offensively. That’s a valuable player. Like a Jordan staal |

It is but let's take a glance into the future. Flyers have Couturier and Frost. They want Gauthier at center. I believe that Cates has upside as a 2nd line winger and can produce at a higher rate offensively playing on the wing than at center. Does that have more value than a top defensive 3rd line center? Debatable.

Let’s glance into the future. Gauthier seems much better suited for wing and I don’t see him being laying center. Still this day you have TK Tipp Foerester and Atkinson, down the line Cutter and Michkov, where does he fit on the wing? Farabee as well whom I forgot |

Torts will move Michkov to center, specifically 4C, so he can learn how to grind and play D. |

Gauthier wants to play center and the Flyers want him at center. Atkinson's days as a Flyer are probably numbered.

Just had a phenomenal world championship at wing, led the tournament in shots. He’s a winger. There’s a log jam at wing, we have poor center depth. Cates is best positioned as a 3C. |

And there’s still Tipp Foerester TK and Movhkov, so where is this future top 6 winger playing ? |

He might eventually be a winger but he's going to play center at BC and the Flyers want him at center. In my opinion for Cates best upside, that's at wing. Not center. Remains to be seen but unless Cates is moved to wing, we won't know. |

I really like Cates’ game. He is a great find in the 5th round. I thought at on time his ceiling was Matt Read like but it looks like it’s a little higher then that. He is just a smart hockey player. Love his stick work. His stick work reminds me of Coots. Wish he was better on the dot. Although he did improve some there as the season wore on. |

and farabee.
center will be fun to watch what happens as well. Coots signed for a long time. Cutter may take the 2c spot from frost. if cates is you shut down 3c, maybe they trade frost.

Potential trades. Same can be said for center so it's all speculation. I defer to what I think is best for Cates development and upside as a player. |

Matt Read as a 3rd line winger scored at a very high rate at ES for a number of years. I think Cates can do the same offensively and be better defensively than Read was as a winger.

Yeah. Good assessment and an even better question. I guess it will depend on the team’s need at the time. Like who could they move into the other vacant spot.
The fact that he is so versatile is a major plus.

collecting assets like this is another reason it was poor asset management to keep Seeler at the tdl, or asking too much for him. if you don't have the picks you'll never have a player. or as danny did, if you have additional picks you can always trade up.

On a championship team a guy like Cates is best on the 4th line in my opinion. With 3rd line upside though.
I’m a big Cates fan but he is just so good at the shutdown type guy that can kick in a little offense here and there. He is great on the PK. That stick of his just takes up so many passing lanes. |

I’m kind of shocked by that…the Flyers really lack top-end talent with the exception of Michkov for me to see them as a top 3 system. |

Probably due to those crackerjack goaltenders they got in rounds 2 & 3 |
