So i guess because a player is great they are a great resource. My experience tells me that the best coaching material does not come from stars but rather platers who sit on the bench watching the stars and while unable to replicate their skills they understand and can better relate what it takes - LFS
I’ve heard something similar, that the game came to easily to the star players and they didn’t understand the game as well. I say bullpoop to that. Coaching comes down to a guy’s, understanding of the game and his ability to relate to and communicate with the players. Journeymen and star players are capable of being good coaches.
I suspect that you don’t see many ex star players coaching comes down to economics. To get to the NHL as a coach requires a grueling apprenticeship, on the buses at the junior level, on ice practices, meetings with the GM coaches and parents, etc.. From there it may mean a few years in the AHL then possibly a job in the NHL. A ex star player with a young family and a healthy bank portfolio may not find he wants to put that kind of time and effort into a second career. He also has other easier opportunities because of his name recognition. Patrick Roy is one exception of a star player willing to put the hard time in to coach.
A journeyman player may not have the same financial security or name recognition to do much else but stay involved in the game and has to put in that hard effort and time up front to try to become a pro coach.
The thing Angotti suggests makes sense, if the player and team are interested. Use ex players in part time situations to work with or mentor players. So long as a Seabrook or Toews or whomever, can communicate and convey necessary information I don’t see an issue. And Brian Campbell seems to be doing just that. |

Ogi was the best, he made sure he said Hi to Eli every day and I loved his meme of a Hunter with binoculars hiding in grass and always got banned for it. - paulr
Both of those things were hilarious. I enjoyed his alt-ego as well. |

I'll add making tough, unpopular decisions and sticking to them.
Everyone thinks that's easy until they have to do it.

Why hasn't Tampa, after giving up all of those picks, not signed Tanner Jeannot yet? |

And here we go again with you bringing coaching into the discussion. All three that I mentioned were two way players, great defensively and pretty good offensively, unlike Gretzky whom you brought up before. Gretzky was a great offensive talent, not so good on the defensive side, not that he needed to be, but his best defensive position was cherry picking by the red line(this is from seeing him play live double digit times). - Angotti
Because kane was great defensively. My point simply is that just because a player is great doesnt necessarily transfer to being a good coach/mentor or whatever word game you want. |

He sure was but showed some real flashes. I was in the TT ain't gonna make it camp, I had seen enough soft contact averse play from the kid with all kinds of talent in his feet and hands.
I touted his near record breaking WJC's, up there in pts per game with Forseberg, but gave up and thought he was too soft...... Another one this amateur GM/scout missed on. - Mr Ricochet
TT isn't anywhere near any kind of scoring record for points in the World Juniors. His point total is ranked 15th best in a single tournament. |

If Todd Bertuzzi was reinstated, this looks like like nothing. - powerenforcer
He told the cops he was going to "End their bloodline" and called one of them the N-bomb. He's done in the NHL |

For this old man who isn't looking to be entertained in between periods this news really really sucks. Bieska is a clever/funny dude without being a clown and has one helluva hockey mind with loads of insight and stories.
No, McLean is not a ratings beast but he's an old school classy proud Canadian who loves the sport all the way down to its roots, not just the NHL.
This sucks out loud. I'm assuming HNIC and Sportsnet wants to go the clown show route TBS and ESPN has. ..... Constant reminders it's a young man's hot take profits driven world and this is just another one. - Mr Ricochet
Their likely gonna hire Dylan Mulvaney at Trudeau's request |

We don't need a ref, b/c really nobody has been crazy nasty for years...since the anti-Eli (moderator) people started talking crap about his wife in an alternate anti JJ buzz copied website for their enjoyment.
- wiz1901
LOL! That's one version I suppose. You left out the part where Eli was clearly upset he didn't get an invite to said alternate site and started banning posters for months and even years in a few cases for people who didn't happen to agree with everything JJ was blogging about. If you notice, a lot of those people are back now and as you mention, it's not so crazy nasty. So what's missing? - HawkintheD
The version typed above where I write "anti-Eli moderator-that is all I heard save for a meet-up at Rockford gme. |

The final piece is bringing in Dan Vincelette to mentor. Maybe McGill, Van Dorp, or Grimson (highly educated) too. |
