Think it's possible that part of his inability to make trades is that some of his prospects have already declined in value.

Oh I agree, funny thing is Buffalo really does have alot of Talent coming through there organization, probably the most I have ever seen especially with what they have on there roster already. A lot of those prospects will never see the ice for the Sabres. It's nice to have but you can't just hold them either, there value drops the longer they don't see the ice in the NHL

some are kicking the can down the road another 2 or 3 seasons to be a cup contender

No, this isn't true. We did have more high-end prospects with Jack and Sam, but the dropoff after that was steep (especially when Murray was done dealing). It was empty after that.
