No, this isn't true. We did have more high-end prospects with Jack and Sam, but the dropoff after that was steep (especially when Murray was done dealing). It was empty after that.

Think its possible that some prospects are worth more value and havent declined, but inclined in value.

A guy like tage for example.

Prospects break thru....

- Boss34

Tell me this, if the Sabres were good during the Eichel era and Tage was what he was. Would the Sabres have given him as much slack. Or would they have said he might have potential but let's use him know for a piece that helps me now. IMO it depends how good or bad a team is and how long they will wait fir that potential to break out.
Better the Team: He probably gets dealt for a ROR
Crappy Team: Gets a little slack, cause he'll we really don't have anything to take his place.

The prospect pool has never been what it is.

3 you could argue are #1. Some Russians that you really have no idea how good they could be (neuchev, Novikov, etc.) Other top prospects in Ostlud and Rosen.

The talent is oooozing out

- DirtyDan

The 3 #1's rank 25-50 in the NHL. The have quantity over quality atm, which is why they don't rank as high as they have been.

Yes it has. Specifically in 2014 and before they picked Eichel

They haven’t had this type of pool + this type of talent on the roster already

I don't think that any of this is nearly as black and white as you make it out to be. I think Boston's Debrusk is a good comparison. He never seemed to break through and was always mentioned in trade talks. He seems to have turned a corner years later, but he could have easily been sent packing sooner.

Its at least in the ballpark, but it wouldn't surprise me if the current prospects end up blowing that list out of the water. Time will tell, of course.

I'll take the pool today over Justin Bailey and Nick Baptiste

That’s the problem with prospects. They aren’t going to all end up studs.

At one point we had :

Grigorenko
Girgensons
Armia
Compher
Ristolainen
Zadorov
Reinhart
Hurley
McCabe

And a few others

It’s easy now to say they aren’t good but at the time that was a ridiculous amount of prospect talent

Don't forget that we have the advantage of hindsight. I remember being relieved that Murray apparently convinced Colorado to take Compher and not Bailey. We all thought that was a damn fine list back then.

In 5 years we will talk about someone like Ostlund or Rosen or even Savoie like we do about Nylander or Bailey etc

They all aren’t panning out

The talent/skill of the prospects between the 2 pools is considerably noticeable.

I've been to Dev camp then and watched this years. It does not compare IMO.

Idk.

Most of us thought we drafted our future top pairing in Risto/Zadorov

10 years later those guys are 4-6 D men

Risto defiantly could of been a top pairing guy. 12 coaches and rushing his development didn't help his case.

Zadorov was never on that level. Big, solid defender is nothing to scoff at though. Always liked him

I don't know - I think the two are very similar. Risto had an advantage of maturity but both of them were too flawed to be top-pairing guys. I think Risto is who he is regardless of coaching. You can't teach hockey IQ.

You certainly can. You just can't rush a guy like that. He gotta go through it at the lower levels first.

And if your gunna teach it right from the NHL level you cant have 12 different voices over the years telling you different things.

I certainly did.

So how many of the Meier-level trades do you think Adams really missed out on? By "missed" out, I am saying that he had a legit shot at and didn't want to pay the price. For example, the Sharks were said to have wanted high-end D prospects and that wasn't us. Chicken man is said to have not wanted to come here. I am not trying to make excuses or anything like that - I am just curious as to where you think he messed up.

That’s the thing though, we have that ability to look in hindsight now

At the time almost everyone penciled those guys into the top pairing when we did our annual making up lines and pairings for future years

Those guys were viewed as staples.

No, you really can't. You can mess it up, I think, but you can't make someone think the game smarter. I think the guy is a warrior, but he doesn't have the noggin to be an elite defenseman.

If you can mess it up, you can certainly fix it. Like anything in life you want to learn, takes time and dedication.

Doing what one coach says, then having another coach come in say something different and then another and then another is never going to be good for development.

This is balogna.

Zadorov and Risto were going to be this teams top pairing for years to come.

Just like Kassian and Foligno were going to be a force to be wrecking with.

Boo hoo Adams has been keeping all of our draft picks and has helped contribute to the best prospect pipelines in hockey.

Adams does well in his trade returns “oh it’s because he’s selling”.

What could possibly be harder than being the guy who had to trade Jack Freaking Eichel ?

Trevling cratered the Flames organization when he traded Tkachuk yet we are sitting here with quite possibly the brightest future in the Eastern Conference.

Meanwhile Dahlin is about to put pen to paper on an 8 year extension, and he got Tage and Cozens signed to deals that are going to be absolutely bargain burners if they aren’t already.

- Swedish_Jesus

All of that don’t mean $hit if we don’t make the playoffs. We need a franking goalie

The beauty of it is there's no right or wrong answer because we don't have the luxury of knowing the discussions
