Petry blocked that option. - Ovation
Oh right, the Sharks might have been on his 15 teams list.

Well Hoffman only has 1 year left on his deal, so maybe they saw it as a shorter commitment.
Guess they believed more in Granlund redeeming himself than in Petry's current value.
Not convinced that was the best decision. - Scabeh
Them taking Petry would have been better in the sense that they have a vet on the blueline that could help the young guys.
Granlund is done, and what a fall he had...
Grier didn't do a great job with this trade |

He did? I know they were planning on buying him or Granlund out prior to the EK trade |

I'm not sure he had tons of options but he basically got cap space (well, eventually) and a first for a norris winning, 100 points defenseman.
I mean, getting rid of that contract was seen as almost impossible a few years ago so I guess that's kind of a win?

Buying out Granlund was considered for sure. He looked awful.
Petry was overpaid and slowing down but still somewhat useful for Pittsburgh as he was their 2nd most used defenseman. |

I have a feeling the options would be better if Karlsson didn't publicly want out and/or would eat more of EK's salary.
If the goal was to just get him out, sure, you are winner, but I'm sure he'd get a better package with more flexibility. |

There was only 1 or perhaps 2 places that he realistically could have been dealt.
Getting rid of the Karlsson contract, and not having to eat a big chunk of it, was a win regardless of the return.

I heard it was just because they didn't want to be stuck with his contract. Not a now issue, but a tomorrow one. |

Perhaps it was Hextall's view?
Because Dubas has been full on the NOW train since he arrived.
