I do not think it is as simple as not building on a Roy or Price.

I think it is you look at your roster/prospects and look at what the strengths you have overall, and especially with rebuild and a young / prospect laden pool of players, build around those players. If the Habs had a young "Price", I suspect the rebuild would be vastly different.

In a cap world, teams do not have the luxury to wait around for their Price or #1 stud center anymore, at they eventually will cap themselves out paying the other prospects they have before getting hold of that one player.

People preach about patience, and there is some aspect to that, but there is also a window forced upon teams based on the cap. A team like the Lightning masterfully got their star players to reasonable contracts and were able to keep building and get depth. The reverse is true for the Leafs, who went all in on 4 players and are not finding any flex to create depth or making moves is extremely hard.

Roll the dice with what you have, create a strategy, build around that, and hope it becomes a contender, or if lucky, even a cup winning team.

I think HuGo saw a really strong defence pool and some dynamic and fast forwards, decided they will build on that, rather than wait for a goalie.

At least, that is how I see it.

I think it's too early to rule Monty out. he may become a very legit #1. or he may not. we'll see over the next few years, early enough to see if he can be the man when Habs are ready to compete. if he is, good. if he isn't, they'll find another one.

Kinda my point.

I think you KNOW the defence is going to be good, and the forward grp, at least top 6, is pointing to looking really strong.

Goaltending is a big question mark - no one really knows at this point.

perso I think Monty will be fine. so far so good.
the only thing I need to see is if he can take the pressure of being the #1. it's a new league, guys don't play 60-70 games anymore. Monty would have 50-55 games, and Allen or the backup 30. and you're right, with a good dcore it's much more easier for the goalie. see Ullmark in BOS compared to his time in BUF.

The new way of thinking came from the fact that Price is no longer playing and they have a good goalie, at best. With no savior in the pipeline coming up, for now. Both Suzuki and Caufield were there when our gm came in. He started to build with what he had.

Same thing with the D and Weber no longer being able to play. The road was already map out on defense as well. Sure, he got Dach and Barron, but there were pieces already in the system or on the roster, to build around.

The d should be good in due time, but I would still expect them to struggle next season. They did at time las year.

Now if they keep Petry to eat some minutes and play on the pp, it might help the kids out. They dont need to play 82 games anyway.

They can trade him at the TDL if they have a good offer that they like by then.
