I don't think there's an issue of trading Carter if he had no control over movement. You can always retain, throw in some picks, and having Carter move to a team where they want a veteran to help out a young superstar (hello, Blackhawks).
Literally everything hinges on a player exiting a HoF career and wanting to:
A. not move his family
B. join a contender
For B, no one who is a contender will want him. |

I've always thought there should be a cap hit reduction for players who you drafted and have only ever played for your organization... as a reward for good drafting. - jmatchett383
Very interesting concept but the pessimist in me thinks salary caps largely exist as a stop gap for bad GMs and owners. They are protecting themselves so the half or more bad decisions makers would vote against this because it helps their competition (decent owners and GMs). |

Why would you lock him in for 2 years? Is it Nylander, Matthews, etc. pipe dream poop? - Feds91Stammer
I think Nylander is obtainable if he doesn't sign an extension with whatever team he gets traded to. I'm also interested in Schief. And with Jarry's injury history and unknown of Blomqvist we may need to go after Helley next year. |

And you think Tatar prevents those from being options? |

For Nylander or Helly yea probably. Now if it's Schief then no it wouldn't. |

Yea that's doubtful. He would have needed more of those 84 point seasons but only has 1 and his next highest is 66 points. My issue will be when they put Toews in the hall. |

Top 100 goal scorer (78th) of all time with two rings.....maybe?....maybe not
EDIT: Does number of NHL games played matter to the HoF....if so he's like 85th all time |

Bill Guerin has almost as many goals and the same amount of rings, but I don't see him as a HOFer.

That's a good example.
EDIT: its not just NHL stuff though...international comes into play, no? Carter has WJC gold and Olympic gold. |

If they're getting him cheap it really shouldn't. Can't imagine that maybe 1M being the difference. Pens also can't really make moves for next year anymore as they have too many guys who could fall off a cliff at any time.
I'd probably go two years if it got him to sign. |

But on which one of those teams as he ever been "the man" so to speak? Only one I could think of would be the 2005 Calder Cup leading scorer. Obviously better stats, but that's the kind of of argument people use to try to put Kris Draper in the HHOF.
Also, he'll have to wait for Mogilny (who should be in by now). More goals and a member of the Triple Gold Club. |

Well in a 6 game tourney (2014 Olympics) he had the 2nd most points (most points for a forward) with 5 for Canada. Doughty and Weber were 1st with 6 each.
I'm not really arguing that he should be...just bringing up some talking points. I lean towards him never getting in.
EDIT: 7 goals and 10 points in 6 games, good for 3rd best on that 2005 WJC gold winning team. Each international team he's been on with Sid he's outproduced Sid hahah |

Phil Kessel is a more interesting candidate to me. I think 1000 points is right on the borderline. Plus he has that iron man streak. And some media members seem to dislike him. Could be makes it eventually. |

3 rings wouldn't hurt chances, either. I'd love to see The Thrill get in.

Are there any hall of famers that were as bad as Carter in their final year(s)? |

I'd imagine there are. Maybe even legends like Howe and Jagr. It shouldn't matter if a guy stayed too long if his career was HoF worthy. |

Has Carter ever been an elite player? Being pretty good for a while isn’t HOF to me. |

46 goals in a season is elite'ish for sure....3 other seasons with 30+ is pretty damn good too....but I think that 46er season would be the only one I would say elite for.

Yeah I don’t think anyone’s gonna keep Duncan Keith out of the HoF just because he was replacement level for a few seasons there at the end. |

I'd also like to see him get 1000 points so hope Phil gets to play. I wonder if the iron man streak is a hindrance since at this point a coach may want to sit him some. |
