LTIR Carter or Tatar signing for $1.1M or less are basically the only paths.

Pitlick is at 1.1 with us 80,000 over the cap, so Tatar would have to sign for 1mil with us dumping Pitlick. Or just LTIR Carter lol

How (frank)ing annoying has this flat cap been? Like, we can't sign a ~$1-2M player? And neither can any other contender?

If they are not going to increase the cap, there should be more paths to alleviate cap space. In football, there's never a single shred of worry about being cap compliant, they just restructure and create more space.

I've always thought there should be a cap hit reduction for players who you drafted and have only ever played for your organization. Their salaries would still be paid in full to make the 50/50 HRR work out, but maybe like a 10% discount per player (i.e. the Pens would save $878k per year on Crosby) as a reward for good drafting.

You can also blame Rutherford for JJ, 900+k buyout.

That’s basically the same concept as Bird rights in basketball and I agree, itd be a good idea. That and have vet min contracts not count against the cap.

Ehh I'm not for the vet min contracts but definitely like the idea of the guys you drafted.

Pens also have SJ 3rd rounder in 2026. Id shop a 2026 3rd and 5th round pick attached to Carter for someone to take him this year. Im assuming GMKD would have to approach Carter and essentially tell him he’s planning on playing younger players which would end up with him in the press box. However, Carter could be ok with that if he planned to retire next year. Get paid to do minimal work is the American dream.

But if Tatar is rumored to be taking a big paycut, I don’t see any problem for a deal around $2 mil/year for 2 years. It seems like he’s ok with less money with more term? Worst case scenario he’s a decent player in your bottom 6. Did Tatar have any significant injuries last season?

The writer clowns (Kingerski) have suggested giving up a 2nd to dump Carter 50% retained.

I don't want Tatar at more than a 1 year deal. I want as much cap space as possible going into next off-season. 1 year deal only or thanks but no thanks.

Tatar made 5.25m last season. I don’t seeing him taking a cheap 2 year deal. Pagnotta speculated Toronto may be in the PTO mix as well. So it seems he would rather take a small 1 year deal with a “contender” rather than sign for market rate money with Buffalo or Nashville.

It’s tough to think he signs under 3 mil. Would be surprising that even a non contender ponies up just for a TDL asset at 50%

Playoff performance limits his TDL value.

Why would you lock him in for 2 years? Is it Nylander, Matthews, etc. pipe dream poop?
