One thing that hasn't been mentioned in all this news coverage: pros' skates are sooooo much sharper than beer leaguers and kids.
I'm not writing this to try to dissuade anyone from wearing protective equipment - just thought I would mention it to add some context to the incident.

Just had a good look at the video… Holy (frank).
That looked like an intentional kick to the head with skates on.
- .OHOH.
We can debate back and forth on whether it was deliberate or not, but one thing is for certain: I've never seen anything like that before in any hockey game I've ever played in or watched.

In fact, nothing even close. - Atomic Wedgie
Either have I but to say that a kick to the neck was 100% done on purpose and buddy should be in jail now is a stretch (for most people).

Yeah, definitely a weird fall.
I just cannot fathom a player would try and murder another with his skate.
We all know the right way is blindside headshot hit or sucker punch the guy from behind ffs.

I was thinking the same thing. Before I had seen the video I just assumed it was a freak accident with Johnson on the ground and someone tripping over him and catching with a skate.
I wasn’t expecting that. Or at the very least I thought maybe he was getting hit and lost balance and that’s why his skate went that high up. But none of that happened.
Here’s the video if anyone hasn’t seen it. No blood shown just the incident itself.

If (and it's an "if" at this point) hitting the player was an intentional act, I would never in a million years imagine it was with intent to do grievous damage.
But when you do stupid stuff, bad things can happen.

Nah. Maybe an attempt to embellish, but I refuse to believe he was like, "Nice! Finally time to roundhouse somebody with my skate in the head area!" - sokosteve
Right? I know some people are (frank)ed up but that goes beyond anything I can imagine.

I honestly do think it’s an accident, but it’s also just a weird ass move to get into that position with your leg during a game.

I'm just trying to figure out how that would be possible.
Best I can come up with is that the opposing player (not the victim) brushes the player with his shoulder, which normally would spin the guy downward and clockwise. But his right skate is firmly dug into the ice, causing him to do a weird pirouette, where his torso is forced downward and to the right, and his left leg flies up.
Sorry, best I can do.
It's like watching the Zapruder film over and over again.

It happens too fast and is too weird a play for it to be pre-meditated.
If you want to argue intent, the only thing would be to argue that he was put in a weird position, and decided to lash out with his skate.
The one player absolutely did NOT try roundhouse the other player in the neck with a skate to kill him. Not something that runs through a players head: ‘man I’m in the mood for some murdering’
It’s a weird play though for sure. The player does try to swing his leg out (my opinion) to trip up the other player (Johnson) and at same time looks to be trying to get an interference call - that’s why it looks ‘off’ to some folks….others are just looking for reasons to be asshats.
No player not even Marty tapes up in the room and thinks how they are going to murder someone out there. That’s an insane suggestion that this kid purposely tried to kill Johnson.

Just watched it again. Didn't really look too deeply the first time due to the shock I guess, but it is a really weird-ass move for sure. Like he was trying to check the lead guy but changed his mind on the push and made an attempt to take out Johnson?
