Was in Italy the past few days, not sure if this was posted, but interesting little piece from LeBrun at The Athletic:
One more note, on the surprising 6-2-1 Vancouver Canucks — one of the nice stories of the early season under new coach Rick Tocchet.
I reached out to a few of the head coaches who have faced them so far this season, and here’s what they had to say:
Panthers head coach Paul Maurice, whose team lost 5-3 to the Canucks on Oct. 21: “I thought they had an incredibly consistent game that night. You know, we don’t see them enough. We only played them twice last year. We lost (Oct. 21), it was a tie game late — they had a two-goal lead and we tied it and then lost it late. You hate losing but I wasn’t overly upset with my team because I thought they (the Canucks) played a hell of a game.
“They were good. Very, very structured. They look like they’re all on the same page. They played a very consistent game for 60 minutes.”
Lightning head coach Jon Cooper, 4-3 winners over Vancouver on Oct. 19: “Well-balanced team. High-end skill surrounded by workers. The goalie gives them confidence, and the coach gets the best out of them.”
Predators head coach Andrew Brunette, whose team lost a pair of games to the Canucks, 3-2 on Oct. 24 and 5-2 on Tuesday night: “They have gotten complete buy-in from their group, and especially their higher-skilled players. They have been the best team we have seen this year in pressuring both sides of the puck, taking time and space away.”
Blues head coach Craig Berube, whose team lost 5-0 to the Canucks on Oct. 27: “Their three best players are driving the bus right now. Strong goaltending. But Tocc has the team playing with urgency and pace and they are competitive.”
All interesting, but my favorite bit there was from Brunette, saying the Canucks were the best team they’ve seen as far as pressing both sides of the puck. That’s as high a compliment as you’re going to get from an opposing coach.
Does this Canucks start to the season have sustainability? I worry about their depth if injuries hit. But what we’re seeing so far is a total buy-in from the players to what Tocchet is selling. And that’s something. |

Haters can’t admit that Tocchet has Myers playing a much better game.
Did I tell you he’s funny as hell and quite the sock hopper. |

Talking to a buddy the other day who is a long term, cynical Canuck fan (absolutely loathes Aquilini) and we both agreed that this team feels different.
We also laughed our bags off talking about the Alberta dumpster fires. |

The BC Lions definitely aren't going to win this game, playing the way they are. |

We also talked about how this team has driven the bus straight off the cliff in November in the past. My buddy also pointed out that Aquilini will somehow f uck everything up by finding a way to make it about himself.
Been fun games to watch. Tonight will be a solid test. |

Good for you for supporting the CFL. To be honest, I don’t know how you do it. I can’t stand that league. |
