well i was a fan of using the depth in the organization to reshape the team, I guess Cutter did that for us.
Let's hope this kid is the real deal, then we need another top D and some serious center help.
I can see Torts going 7 D, for once I can understand why, but when Cates is back, shxt will get real. I just don't like what 7 D does with chemistry ...
I was wondering that myself but couldn’t find any examples of that happening

Bill,
Do you know whether Anaheim would receive the same compensatory pick if he does not sign with them as a team that drafted him? - Glak18
Not sure - but if they do then:
"If a team does not sign their first-round pick within two years, they will be awarded a compensatory pick in the Draft immediately following. The pick will be in the 2nd round, equal to the selection number of the unsigned player. All other teams' selections move back one spot."
That might have been the leverage Danny needed to get the second rounder.

I'm not sure if this situation has ever occurred before, everything I can find is the wording "drafted", not the player's rights. In one way I would assume it would transfer with the rights, but other ways I could see it voided because of the trade. Who knows if it comes to that point, but it does make me curious.
UPDATE: Closest I could find was the Adam Fox situation, Calgary traded his rights to Carolina and was unable to sign him. Although Fox never became a UFA and instead traded before to NYR for 2 2nd round picks where he signed.

They were saying this morning on Sirius NHL that the Flyers had discussed this with teams and the Quitter Gauthier camp whether he would be willing to sign with whoever he was traded to. Apparently the answer for Anaheim was yes, otherwise the deal wouldn't have gotten done.
I saw a lot of comments in regards to being all for the players and they should have more say in where they go etc.
I understand it to an extent. Some places are essentially a death sentence for a career.
But this really bothers me. The fifth overall pick after telling a team he was all in, has a temper tantrum because he didn’t get his way and essentially took his ball and went home. We aren’t even talking like the 30th pick, but the fifth overall pick. Which means a team and its fans sat through an entirely terrible year and it’s only reward for that changed his mind and doesn’t want to play here.
There needs to be protections on draft picks. I don’t know what the answer is, I’m not smart enough, but I lean towards the team holds your rights forever. Don’t sign a contract, you aren’t going anywhere. Play overseas. Tough. Grow up, be a man, collect your money, and make it work. And after your contract expires and you want to be elsewhere have at it.
I think Torts going 7 defenseman is away to give himself time before making a real committed decision with the defense. I wouldn’t be surprised if Zamula sees the lowest even strength ice time by a lot but sees second unit PP time.

Thanks, I would assume the underline agreement would be that he would sign there, BUT....in the hypothetical situation he doesn't, for poops and giggles, does the team receive a compensatory pick if he doesn't or another player in the future does the same?

Its an interesting problem. Logically, I would assume the team holding his rights gets the consideration for the pick. (that is, if it still even applies after a trade)
Even a loser franchise like the Coyotes got their star college prospect signed. We don't need changes to the CBA just because the dopes running the Flyers lost out on Gauthier.

I agree and isn't that the spirit of the CBA? A player doesn't become a UFA until he reached 27 years of age or plays 7 Accrued seasons. That's the control the team that drafts you has if you want to play in the NHL
