Bill Meltzer: Flyers Gameday: 1/18/24 vs DAL - bmeltzer
As always... thanks, Bill, for your blog... I always say I'm not going to select the first game back from a road trip, since they are often losses...yet here I am again, having selected this one as one of my half STH games. Hoping this is not a trap-game... back a few days with no practice... and a team that's on a roll... with a good MOJO this season... a great vibe. Hoping Coots and JD are back and healthy... and there is a first goal on a Flyers stick (maybe on Atkinson's).
Let's Go, Flyers. 🤞 |

I once took a season and charted every team’s W/L record for the first home game off of a long road trip. I forget what criteria I used, I think a 3 game road trip. Just for gambling purposes. The results were unfounded. I think the home team actually won more of the games. |

We def need Atkinson to get on a goal scoring streak now. Would help. I’m hoping coots and drysdale both play. Devils and panthers both lost last night. Good news. |

First game after a road trip against one of the best teams in the west. Will be another tough test and then the speedster Lanche come in on Saturday. The tests keep on coming. Each passing day with no Coots raises my eyebrow more and more. We know how these things usually end up. |

IF the Flyers can make the playoffs, who would make a good matchup?
Carolina?
Pittsburgh? Another 1st round rivalry battle
NY Rangers?
Would be hilarious if Toronto just missed |

Some new revelations from Scott Hartnell on the Quitter Gauthier drama:
"We knew from probably last summer that he just said, 'No talks,"
"His agent, Kurt Overcharge or Overhardt or whatever his name is—he just said, 'Don't go see this guy, don't watch him play, don't reach out. He's done with you guys.'"
Apparently, Briere told Gauthier that he couldn't guarantee the player a spot on the team if he signed immediately, specifying that he would have to earn his place or get sent down to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Hartnell suggested that Gauthier took this "the wrong way" because "he's probably used to every team he's been on rolling out the red carpet for [him]."
Gauthier had a list of other teams he was interested in being traded to that he gave to Briere, "...and some of those teams on that list said, 'We'll pass,' right off the bat."
Sounds like Quitter is a real class act. |

I bet they did. They don’t want this prima Donna on their team. Imagine when contract negotiations come to pass? Gonna be a mess. Good luck Anaheim.
Anaheim will have to guarantee him a spot in the top six or he’ll likely have a hissy fit. |

Either way, whatever his reason, he didn't want to play for the Flyers and now he's gone. Time to move on.

Pretty interesting, that’s usually a big gambling call right. Dallas is a real solid team top to bottom, I think this one is going to be an uphill battle. |

Sounds like Quitter is a real class act. Oh dude, please let it go. It's been beaten to death. No offense meant, but this is like Philly talk radio around here talking about the Eagles 24/7. Why I stopped listening to those stations years ago. Thanks! |

I'm not sure why the Flyers made this an issue. Seriously, in what universe was he not going to make this team? Even with as well as they are playing now, he would still make it. For some unknown reason, the macho Flyers turned it into a Richard measuring contest, and that is all you need to know about this world class organization. This has more Jones on it than Brier. Being a knuckle dragger (that could not fight), Jones had to scrape for everything he got....I'm guessing he is jealous |

Flyers a home dog again tonight. They've probably only been favored in about 10 games this entire season. Pretty incredible how they keep throwing shade at all the pundits! Torts for Jack Adams! Thanks! |

This is what I brought up yesterday. Hartnell visit to SC. Considering it’s radio silence (or a lack of actual instances of betrayal) I think the Flyers have been as transparent as they can be with this situation.
