Decent deal for Benoit and the Leafs. |
|

Nice little signing and definitely earned. Benoit has been a really good bottom pair kind of find and licked up 3 years for decent price. With how many d potwntially ate coming out, good to have him stayin and familiar. |

Speaking of NUMBERS. Here it is.
MATTHews mathenating :
Matthews has six hat tricks this season so far.
He also has 10 multi-goal games (not counting the hat tricks).
With 71 games played, he is averaging a hat trick every 11.8 games and a multi-goal effort every 7.1 games.
His last hat trick was in the 9-2 steamrolling of Anaheim back on February 17, which is a span of 19 games.
His last two goal game was March 20 when he scored 5p (2g, 3a) versus the Caps. That was 4 games ago.
Further mathification reveals that Matthews is long overdue for a hat trick, and his six hat tricks is a team record that he holds after surpassing Darryl Sittler’s record of five in a single season.
Conversely, he had a multi-goal game within his typical time frame (4 games ago out of a 7 game expected span). Will this disrupt the hat-trick mathifying? It remains to be seen, but I predict the answer will be no.
I prognosticate that he will score one more hat trick and have one more two goal game. He currently sits at 59 goals, so let’s add five to that for his expected multi-goal games before season end. That brings him to 64 goals. Can he make it to 70?
Now, for the final mathening : he has scored at least one goal 37 times in 71 games, so he scores at least one goal every .52 games. Assuming he plays every game of the 11 remaining, he projects to score another 5.72 goals. Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt and round that up to an even 6.0 goals. That would give him a final season tally of 65 goals.
But, I predict he gets five of those from multi-goal games and one more record shattering hat trick. On top of that, he will get another (more mathy stuff) two or three goals on top of his expected multi-goal games.
SUMMARY : While we would all like to see him get 70 goals, I think reasonable math suggests he will get 65-68 goals. The last 65+ goal scorer was Ovechkin who scored 65 in 2007-2008. I think Matthews surpasses that this season.
Thanks for putting up with my mathifying. He is the word “potato” : potato.

The last 60+ goal scorer was Ovechkin who scored 65 in 2007-2008. I think Matthews surpasses that this season.

Rielly - ??

Benoit - Timmins
I'm guessing a couple of large D are the primary targets to fill in the blanks.
Ciao Brodie, Gio, and Lilly.

What I want to see is 60. Only 9th player to ever have multi 60 goal seasons.

I wouldn't remove Lilly yet. Lilly and Timmins can fight for a spot, plus injuries. Carrying 7 would be fine.

Would be ..I move him b/c his cap hit will be doubled with arbitration eligibility. Leafs need that space to improve rather than spend it on a 3rd pairing guy.
I don't hate him ..he just hasn't taken that "top 4" step and will be too expensive for the Leafs bottom pair.
Similar theory for Robertson ...I like him but you look at the roster and have to wonder if he's an ideal fit ....he's been pretty good so I think he might have better value as a trade trip this summer.
The run to the Cup could change all of this thinking though ... |

Happy to pedantically help!
Personally, I'd like for him to hit at least 65. Not sure if he gets there but it would be fun! |

I'd throw a big number at Pesce too. Leafs have the space assuming they are content to let Bert go. |

I assume that if he hits 67 the curse is broken and we cruise to the most unleafy of Stanley Cup wins. |
