I don't like the Era Adjusted stuff as much as I thought I would. It's too mathematically simplistic. Saying that Wayne Gretzky's 92 goal season was equivalent to Matthews' this year is preposterous - it just is. The next closest to Gretzky that year was Mike Bossy, with 64. So they are saying that Gretzky scored a flattened 69 goals and Bossy scored 47 . . .

But if you look at league scoring - it spikes when Gretzky arrives in the league and remains spiked until Gretzky leaves his prime years and is no longer dominant. The whole time Gretzky is in his prime he and his teammates are scoring at epic rates and often the opposition was as well because they were playing wide open hockey.

Like remember when Lemieux retired because of a bad back and cancer and hating the league - but was still leading the league in scoring? Then he was away for 4 years and came back at age 35, and had 76 points in 43 games? People like Lemieux and Gretzky were the reason scoring was up. They weren't scoring just because of the era. And simply removing their individual totals from the calculation doesn't do justice to the impact they were having on the totals in the league at the time of their dominance.

I think it's best to not try to compare scoring in eras - there's just too many variables to consider and it's largely fantasy dreamed up to drive clicks and engagement.

AM34 scoring 66 (and counting) goals this season has been, to steal your adjective, preposterous and thoroughly enjoyable to watch. He's 13 goals up on the next guy in terms of goals scored which is absurd.

I'm just hoping all of this goalscoring translates itself into the post-season.

And on a personal note, a couple of years ago I stayed in the area where Meruelo is proposing to build a new arena in Phoenix.

The Costco there was franking glorious. You can't even imagine how good the liquor section was.

So if it does get built, that's the silver lining.
