Bill Meltzer: Quick Hits: Phantoms, Gendron, OHL Playoffs

I was hanging out on the Pens blog earlier this morning and I proposed a trade of coaches. I said that we'd give them Torts for Sully, but that they'd have to take Rocky Thompson as their new PP coach. They love Torts over there! In fact, the one guy went as far as to say that Torts is the best coach in the league. I suggested that he should come to this blog and see what folks on here think of Torts. I wonder if The Rat will get suspended for pushing the linesman out of the way on his way to the bench the other night? Inquiring minds want to know.

No chance he gets suspended....Funny thing is that if Pens let Sullivan go after last seasonRangers would have hired him instead of Lavy..they were holding off hiring a coach till they saw what Pens would do..funny how things work out Lavy has done a tremendous job developing the young players while handing the vets so well.

Seems like a kid that has some good tools but can the flyers break out those tools and help him reach his celing. Mocks have the flyers picking Elick at 30. Seems like another decent pick.

Listening to AntSan on NK about Couts. While the new agent could mean a few things if it is meant to facilitate a trade I can’t see who’s taking his contract. Had he played the 2nd half as well as the first then maybe someone desperate would make a trade. Boston is the most in need of centers but I think they’re going to go hard after Stamkos this summer. Boston will have $20m in cap space and could free up another $5m by moving Ullmark.

Unless Fletcher gets signed somewhere as GM of an NHL team no one is taking that Couts contract. 7.75M for 5 or 6yrs on a guy with knee and back problems on the wrong side of 30 == unmovable without lots of $$ being retained by Flyers. Lots$$

Lavy always does well early with new teams, but you better hope that the Rags strike while the iron is hot cause Lavy's welcome always seems to run out rather quickly.

I wasn't necessarily talking about his tenures as much as I was talking about his record with teams. It always seems like teams get a boost from his arrival in the first year or two, and then things drop off from there. I could be wrong about this since I didn't follow his career that closely. I know in Philly he took the Flyers to the Finals in his first year and then things kind of went off the rails after that.
