None of the core 5 are going anywhere this offseason, which kinda makes this year’s playoff failure moot.
If the Leafs make it to the semis next year, Marner will be re-signed and Tavares will be offered a 4-year, lower $$$ contract.
Anything less and summer 2025 will see significant changes. - Atomic Wedgie
Disagree on Marner re-signing with the Leafs. The Leafs can replace his cap hit with a tough as nails centre that can score 60 points and show up for the playoffs.
I can see Tree-dying make a similar move to the trade when he was forced to trade Tkachuk. The difference being instead of the player telling the team he will not re-sign it will be the team telling Marner they will not re-sign him so pick a team, sign a long term deal and Brad can complete a hockey trade for picks, prospects and a d-man or goalie of some use. I don't think the July 1st bonus will be a factor at all.

I don't think it's the style inasmuch as the players. The Canes also don't have net crashers which is detrimental in the playoffs. You need guys driving the crease, ruining the goalie's day. I don't know how much of that is in Brind'Amour's coaching style - but I know it's not really in the players they have on the ice.
Now it's a similar problem to Toronto - too much perimeter play and not enough movement to the net itself. They have the guys, though, who could do it - Knies and McMann come to mind, but they need more.
From what I've seen Berube is a very simple coach - dump it in and go get it. Play in lanes, provide support, and limited green lighting to the D depending on the game situation. That said - simple can work. It might also be closer to what Treliving envisions his preferred hockey style to be. - Monkeypunk
Agree with this. Also Berube would not do well with Marner's particular style of hockey. Mitchy could write a book and call it Contact Avoidance in the NHL 101

MSG wants a 5th game - conspiracy something something something. - Atomic Wedgie
MSG doesn't need the money. At least the Canes are supported by a good crowd. It makes me sick to watch a Panthers home playoff game with the building at about 30% capacity.

“ The latest data point: The Panthers led all NHL teams in average attendance during Round 1 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, averaging 19,530 fans for their three home games against the Tampa Bay Lightning at Amerant Bank Arena. The listed capacity for the Sunrise arena is 19,250.”
Maybe getting an 8th year moves the needle for Marner. As a UFA he gets a 7 year deal. Accept a trade to say Utah and sign for 8 years. Maybe that sways his mind.

Spoken like a guy who has never been to Utah.
Seriously, why would any guy want more than one wife?

how many net crashers will treedying be able to afford after shammy makes him resign pencil neck and buy out the grim reaver?🤔
knies and mcbossey are great👍🏿
it will be the same lineup basically because he’ll have to scramble for more role players to support the corpse 5🤦♂️
they’ll shake up the d corpse again🤦🏿♂️
i don’t know who the goalies will be because glass joe is always in the training room with his booboos🤦♂️
maybe they move sievesonov’s dad over to live with him and belt buckle him every morning to get him ready for the day 🤦🏿♂️
maybe get Anderson from Les crapitantes with some salary retained to come down and go to the net🤔

Getting boo’d every time he touches the puck, for 82 games, might change his mind.
No, I don’t believe that will happen, but if he’s still on the team come XMass, and he’s not extended, the writing is on the wall! And how much patience will fans have for another Mats Sundin scenario, after paying someone over $80mil??

Out of curiosity...who is that tough as nails centre that scores 60 points and shows up for the playoffs? Ryan O'Reilly? Because that didn't work either.

And how did that trade go for Treliving? Oh, his team got a 50 point, 10 million dollar winger? Yikes.
Treliving doesn't have a (frank)ing clue how to build a playoff winner. His teams have almost never won in the playoffs and actually missed them quite often.
If you want a GM to let a player walk for nothing (Gaudreau) and put your team 5 years backwards, Treliving is the perfect guy. Just ask Calgary fans who probably won't see their team undo the damage he did for another 5 years.
If Brind'amour were available, he'd be my preference - even though Berube won a cup and then sort of had his roster ripped out from under him, I am the world's biggest fan of the puck pressure that Brind'amour has the Canes play with. When Keefe started that was something the Leafs were supposed to be doing and some opposing coaches commented on it - but they backed off of that defensive and forechecking approach year over year. - Monkeypunk
1. Quenneville
2. Berube
3. Rod
That should be the short list.
While it would be nice to have a coach transform every single player on the team, I think in this situation you need a coach who maximizes what we already have.
Considering the "type" of players Quenneville had in Chicago, he's by far the best match. And, obviously, the one with the most playoff success.
Toews, Kane, Hossa and Keith are not that different from Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Rielly if you look at what their skillsets are. I think he can maximize what we have better than any other candidate.
The supporting cast has to be adjusted but the main ingredients are there.
