If Brind'amour were available, he'd be my preference - even though Berube won a cup and then sort of had his roster ripped out from under him, I am the world's biggest fan of the puck pressure that Brind'amour has the Canes play with. When Keefe started that was something the Leafs were supposed to be doing and some opposing coaches commented on it - but they backed off of that defensive and forechecking approach year over year.

Unless they eat a lot of money and are willing to lose a few trades, I see them running it back for another year.

None of the core 5 are going anywhere this offseason, which kinda makes this year’s playoff failure moot.

If the Leafs make it to the semis next year, Marner will be re-signed and Tavares will be offered a 4-year, lower $$$ contract.

Anything less and summer 2025 will see significant changes.

Fun fact : for a brief time, on the Hartford Whalers, Dave Keon, Bobby Hull, and Gordie Howe played together on one line.

One added obstacle: both Tavares and Marner get significant bonuses on July 1 - both are owed less than $1M for the remaining 364 days.

MLSEL is no longer throwing around money indiscriminately - they aren’t going to do any trade that costs $10M and makes the team weaker.

I don't think it's the style inasmuch as the players. The Canes also don't have net crashers which is detrimental in the playoffs. You need guys driving the crease, ruining the goalie's day. I don't know how much of that is in Brind'Amour's coaching style - but I know it's not really in the players they have on the ice.

Now it's a similar problem to Toronto - too much perimeter play and not enough movement to the net itself. They have the guys, though, who could do it - Knies and McMann come to mind, but they need more.

From what I've seen Berube is a very simple coach - dump it in and go get it. Play in lanes, provide support, and limited green lighting to the D depending on the game situation. That said - simple can work. It might also be closer to what Treliving envisions his preferred hockey style to be.
