Well, I guess we'll have to see how this plays out, but it's additional assets to keep or use in future trades. In the next 18 months we could see the Blackhawks retain salary on Mikheyev and move him on. Lafferty is a useful rental piece for a team, so we could end up with multiple picks down the road for a 4th. It's not like we are needing the cap space right now and these guys are NHL players. They aren't stars but they belong in the NHL. - breadbag

Yes, and down the road maybe you can move Mikheyev in a deal for a 2nd or 3rd round pick retaining salary at the TDL. He isn't bad defensively and his value can increase if the Hawks get a little bit of offensive out of him with the change of scenery/role.
Maybe we could end up moving Lafferty later too, he would probably be worth the 4th we just spent.
This could be a 4th round pick in return for a 2nd, a 3rd and a 4th in the long run just for using some of our cap space. |

Didn't we get a 2nd from them to eat D!ckinsons contract?

Apparently there’s a 3rd team in the trade. Not sure how that will work. |

Okay so let me think about this
McDavid drafted 6 seasons before they made the playoffs consistently
Barkov 8 seasons before they made the playoffs consistently
So 9 seasons in the league gets to SC final for McD and 10 for Barkov
So as I've stated before, i have no problem with them signing or making deals for impactful FA or RFAs but let's see what we got before we jump the gun, this is all based on Bedards time line imo. - BetweenTheDots
There's no hard and fast rule as to when guys are available or when you should sign them. How long after Crosby was drafted did they make the playoffs and win a cup? They lost the cup in his third year and won in his fourth. How about Toews and Kane? about the same if memory serves.
My point of view is that it behooves the Hawks to be competitive earlier rather than later. Take advantage of as many cheap contracts as possible. That doesn't mean being reckless with picks prospects or cap dollars, but the Hawks have boatloads of all three, and not all of these kids will play for the Hawks - there isn't enough room. They have an abundance of potential talent at LD. I wouldn't be surprised if one or some of those were used in transactions in the next year or two.
As Mike Tyson famously said - "Everyone has a plan until you get punched in the mouth." $hits gonna happen. Injuries, regression, a bad draft pick here or there and right now a lot of the higher end potential talent is on the smaller side. I'm sure there will be a call to introduce more size and some RHD's along the line here. |

Mikheyev ACL surgery January 2023. Might not have been fully recovered this last season. |

Those teams had so many pieces in place already. I brought up the Oilers and the Panthers because thats where the Blackhawks are right now. He finally got rid of all the contracts which gives him room to sign some real pros this year and next year and the following.

Right, but it sounds like you are arguing against KD doing that. Am I misunderstanding? |

Not at all but he has to be very careful going forward always being mindful of the salary cap. I prefer FAs as opposed to trade and sign players
I've said before they need to sign 2 RD, 2 top 6 forwards and 2 bottom 6 forwards at least this season. |

That's kind of a hindsight is 20/20 thing. We know now that they had those guys in place. We didn't know what a lot of those guys were before they won though. in 2008-09 the highest point scorer was Havlat with 77. Then you had a Kane and Toews at or near 70 and a seven guys between 40 and 53 pts. |

Mikheyev is KGB; he's here to report to Vlad about Demidov. One false move and his uncle's goldfish gets it.... |

If Lafferty signs Hawks will have 12 forwards including Nazar and Slaggert. Looks like Entwistle, the Johnsons, and Raddysh are close to gone.
And this trade may preclude a UFA forward being signed. |
