Stamkos and Killorn wanted more money up front. In the end, the lightning offered Killorn the same as his current contract, over longer term. The dead cap era of Covid killed the lighting. They lost 2 or 3 core players because of this.
Stamkos can make cup runs with Tampa and retire a legend, but have to wait a few years after to finish getting paid the same amount. Yes, present value dollars are worth more with inflation.
My guess is he is going to look at the gross offers he receives and Tampa will try to match over term. Tampa will not be hamstrung by cap for anyone anymore.
