[WARNING: Personal opinion here]

A first rule of changing the NHL scoring system should be the understanding there will be no points awarded to any team that loses and that there will be a winner and a loser. Having zero loser points would establish a totally new mind set.

Give 4 points for a regulation win. The increased value would provide a much larger incentive to win the game, in regulation, and thus should reduce the number of ties at the end of regulation.

Giving 3 points for an OT win would eliminate even more ties.

Give 2 points for a shootout win – there will be a lot less of them too.

Give 0 points to the team that loses. Possibly a participation ribbon. This is the biggest key to making regulation wins so much more important.

An argument could be made to have a first half and second half season - but the point system today promotes an incentive to lose – and that’s just not right.

4 points is too much. If a team can get 4 points in a game and the other team 0 points you would most likely have a clear playoff picture by January hahaha

I don't think the NHL regular-season OT has ever been longer than 5 minutes (in my lifetime at least).

Was OT really only 5 minutes in the 90s? I could have sworn it was 20 minutes of 5v5 one period.

OT was five minutes of 5v5. Winner received two points losers got zero.

Here is a little history on overtime in the NHL. In the 1920's and 30's overtime had several variations.

5 mins of 5v5. Honestly can't remember if they ever did 4v4. I remember games where both teams went into a shell at the 10 minute mark of the 3rd period. It was torture. People would leave the arena silent like a loss because they just watched 15 minutes of sludge. Getting the point still felt like a loss. Just my recollection.

Nobody's perfect, most of us can admit that. Most of us can take a little ribbing also.

I just wonder how many people got the Beverly HIllbillies reference, it's an old show.

I didnt get the reference, never really watched the show...but speaking of Beverly Hills, I watched the new Beverly Hills Cop movie the other night...liked the first 2 when I was younger, 3rd wasn't the best but still had some chuckles...and while there's definitely cheese in the newest one I did get a few legit chuckles out of it as well. The movie starts at a Red Wings game.
