A 3rd. I think the only teams that would do something like this would be Columbus, Calgary or San Jose. Most teams have young guys they need to play anyways instead of bringing in one to eat their development. |

Robertson is in a pickle here.
I'd let him go if it was a second round pick coming back to the Leafs.
Robertson only leverage is to with hold his services from the team.
this will only hurt him and his development IMO. |

What is the most that Robertson is worth to anyone?
Robertson will be turning 23 in a month. He's a crafty, but not strong skater with above average offensive instincts and has an excellent shot. He's 5'9 and poor on defense. He doesn't really bolster those around him too much (although his numbers with Noah Gregor made Gregor look better - but I'd argue that was more to do with Gregor not being particularly good more than Robertson).
If you offer him up to $1.5m, I'd assume the Leafs match rather than watch him walk for nothing.
If you're going above, you might as well make the Leafs squirm and go up to the $2.29m - which Robertson simply isn't worth yet. Then we get a 3rd for him - which is probably all you fetch for him in a trade.
He's young enough that his _potential_ still exceeds a 3rd, but his cap hit simply doesn't exceed his current level of play.
But if you want to really take the good in Robertson's game? He was given 11 minutes of ice time all year and almost no power play time. Among forwards with more than 500 minutes of ice time, Robertson was 16th in the league in G/60. His points/60 were 36th.
I'd like the Leafs to try and keep him. Encourage him to work with Berube for one year and if it doesn't work out, we can move him - but this would be both him and the team betting on him to succeed.
1 year, be better, earn your ice and get paid. |

He scored 14 goals in 56 games and has offensive abilities. Just because Leaf fans have soured on him, does not mean that someone else thinks he has upside.

Honestly - he's 6'1 / 206. He's bigger than Robertson for sure, but that's not that big by current standards for a projected centre.
I'm not poopting on him to be unnecessarily critical or argue with you - I'm just being objective about it. He played 4th line minutes and was not out of place. I was generally impressed with his pace and how he played, but in terms of performance he had 2 really good games (a 2 goal game against LA and a 2 goal / 1 assist game against Florida). You take those two out and he had 1 goal and 1 assist in 23 games.
He paced out to about a 13 goal season - and he is just turning 23 prior to the start of the season as well - so he's 12 days younger than Robertson.
I am certain that they gave out the $2.29m because Holloway isn't worth it now and the Oilers have such limited cap space that they will probably have to balk at the number. But in 2 years when that deal is up St. Louis is gambling he will be worth it or more. Same with Broberg. They're gambling he'll become a top-4 defenseman. Have cap room, will travel.
If what Friedman said was true (I am citing someone else here and did not hear the Friedman report myself, so if it's wrong I apologize in advance) - Broberg asked for $1.8m in January and Holloway wanted 2 years @ $1.1m - and Holland didn't want to do it.

If somebody thought he was worth that they would have offersheeted him long ago and had to pay no compensation.
The fact that nobody has done it speaks volumes about his worth. |

Both offersheets are basically bets these players will grow into something more than what they currently are.
I think in Holloway's case, you know he's a NHL player. Not necessarely a top 6 player or a great one, but the young man will play on your team. Unlike Robertson who, if he doesn't pan as a top 6 player, doesn't seem to have a role on a NHL team. Maybe someone still believes in him and offers him something... but I doubt it.
Broberg will probably go to St-Louis... the guy couldn't play as a regular on the Oilers last season and they don't have the strongest defense. It sucks for them losing a former 10th overall but, as you mentionned, they had time to sign him if they truly believed in him.

I agree with this. Holloway seems to be a guy who could be as high as a 2C, but likely never really hits that ceiling and makes it as a decent 3C.
I didn't think much of Broberg - who was rumoured to be on the trading block and I think teams showed moderate interest. Holland, I think, was hoping to recoup a 1st, which just isn't where Broberg's value sits. But he's young, can skate, and was projected to be a top-4 guy.
If they get to their ceilings and St. Louis pulls off both moves (which, if you have the Oilers cap issues - now and next year with Draisaitl and Bouchard up, might not be out of the realm of possibility), it will be a coup. "A veritable treasure trove of riches," some strange people might say.
With regards to Robertson - I couldn't disagree with you. His limitations on his own side of centre make him a top-6 or bust kind of player. It's hard for other established teams to take that risk on him and it's hard for less established teams to decide that Robertson is a better gamble than their own developing players.
A guy I thought of (and it took me a while to remember his name) was Rob Schremp - he had all these offensive tools, but was a nightmare defensively. I always thought he had the offensive skills to be a solid NHL player and he just fizzled out.
I just looked him up on Elite Prospects and at 38 he's still playing. In China. He has 68 points in 15 games. That's like rookie mode on a video game.

Letting Robertson go for mice nuts of a return will be a mistake. Just my opinion. And before you reply, remind yourself, idgaf what you think either. |
