Yep so the refs decide which consideration is more important TO THEM and you have to know player reputation then comes into play, the relationship a player has with a ref, if the guy who got rocked is a 'star player' or a 4th line scrub etc.

If Reeves was the guy who got drilled on Saturday night by Nurse do we think the 5 min major for a match penalty and a 5 game suspension would have been given to Nurse? I don't.

Funny how it's never a problem in rugby.

No equipment in rugby, no false sense of security. No one charges head first, its usually shoulder to shoulder while making an effort to wrap your arms are the player, if not, then its an illegal hit. They are taught how to properly tackle, no one tries to spear anyone using their head....like NFL'ers do. In rugby their tackling skills are taught to not use their heads.

Maybe but I'm not so sure. Sadly I do think the league applies rules differently to different players and different teams to 'set the tone' for the rest of the league.
It's wrong but I feel pretty strongly that it happens.

IMO the Ex-players all think 'old school' hockey and neither of those hits would have got a penalty back in the day. Hell both would have been on a Don Cherry Rock 'em Sock 'em video and the guys who threw the hits would have been seen as nothing short of awesome.

The media seems terrified to really call out poor officiating or the league in general.

The game has changed. We know so much more now about things like CTE and the game has made half assed attempts to change but really it's more smoke and mirrors.

Im not disagreeing with the above and have no doubt its true.
But that said, I do believe nurse would have gotten same penalty as reaves during the game. Suspension, who knows.
