Tough to play when 3 of your players know they want to trade you π€· - mr.sir
They may need change - but Drury is handling this exceptionally poorly.

He canβt play physical worth a poop so heβd be shipped out just like Liljegren under this coach and management anyways. |

Didn't they get the pick they used to draft Cowan for Sandin? |

Yep. It was a great deal for the Leafs. π. One of Dubas' best, thankfully. |

That pick was originally owned by the Boston Bruins, I just enjoyed learning. |

What I want to see is Marner, Tavares, Willy all cooking like Walter White while simultaneously Matthews is going on a score-crazy rampage, and Stolarz and Woll are standing on their heads. Oh did I mention this is all happening in the playoffs, cause that's an important part. |

Leafs at the top of the Atlantic with some games in hand. Could easily see them getting minimum 4 out 6 points the rest of the week. |

He's +16 at 5v5; no defenseman with more than 200 minutes played has been on the ice for more 5v5 Goals For this year than Sandin. He's actually on for 4.67/60 goals for which leads the league.
Conor Timmins is +9 and no defenseman with more than 200 minutes played has been on the ice for fewer 5v5 goals against (4) this year than him. He's on for 0.77/60 goals against, which leads the league. 2nd is Benoit, 7th is McCabe and 32nd is Tanev.
Niche-wise Sandin would either have had to be a better option than Rielly or OEL to really fit in with what we needed, so I'm not sure that his success equates to what he would have accomplished here. But good for him sincerely - I always liked Sandin more than Liljegren. And hey since Liljegren joined the Sharks they're 6-6-3; they were 3-7-2 at the time of the trade.
If you can find a better person for a role you have well defined, then you get them. I don't think either of them fit a role here better than anyone else who already had that role.

Sandin was a lefty, so he always had an uphill battle for a regular spot in the top 4.
Lillybust as a righty should've been able to secure a spot, but he didn't/couldn't play the style that Berube was looking for.
Interesting to me is that OEL has way more snarl than I thought. Something happened to him in FLA, possibly a Satanic ritual or a blood sacrifice.

OEL played like that in Phoenix when he was under Tippett. |

Knies is the real deal.
Stolie-Wollie goalies are the real deal.
This feels different now. The Tampa game could have had a Leafy ending, but it didn't. The guys locked it down and killed the comeback attempt.
Chicago could have been a trap and ended up all Leafy, but it didn't.
JT looks 10 years younger, Marner is looking like Kucherov, Knies is the power forward you need, Papi is back and the pick your poison effect is rolling. Once everyone gets healthy, this is a (frank)ing contender.
No longer a pretender. This team will make it past the second round. That is not a prediction, it's just a feeling I get when I see this team play now. It feels different.
Not saying "plan the parade", but I'm saying it's not crazy to think about it.
BE-lieve , BE-LEAF, BE-rube.

Matthews has 6 goals in 15 games this year.
Leader is reinhart with 18 goals in 25 games.
Matthews is 12 goals back with 58 games left. If he stays healthy I think he can still get in the rocket conversation. |

Grebbie is a lil poop disturber. Is he our new Korporal Komarov? - gravyface
To me he is more of a General Grabo V2.0 but regardless I love this kid. Plays hard to the whistle, that totally legal hit he threw near the end of the game on Murphy (I think?) was beautiful and the Hawks got all but hurt over it.
This type of thing is encouraging to me, makes it look, and feel like this Leafs team is buying into an attitude adjustment and I can only look at the head coach as the why.

At the risk of sounding negative - not the way he looked yesterday. I know he scored and it was a nice shot, just over the pad - on a play where Nylander did the work.
Matthews has had 3 games this year where his line owned less than 40% of the scoring chances in a game - game 2 against New Jersey and the last two.
He's lost more contested pucks in the last couple of games than I've seen him lose in quite a while. It looks like whatever is bothering him is still bothering him.
I'd also go so far as to say that historically his ability to drive play and drive a line is linemate agnostic. He will fare better with guys like Nylander or Marner or Hyman - but realistically Matthews is typically a takeaway machine, a blockng machine and he can put on stickhandling clinics while burying beautiful shots. He is one of the top-3 players on the planet and even though he's been very effective at times, he hasn't looked complete yet this season. |

I'd have to say that Mitch Marner was the best Leaf on the ice again tonight. - Monkeypunk
I assume you aren't including the goalie in that opinion then because IMO Stolarz was the best Leaf last night with some very timely and big time saves to keep the Leafs lead intact.
I was pleasantly surprised with the game several of the Leafs had actually like Minten, Myers, Grebs and Lorentz. It was nice to hear some objective broadcasting also, they were raving about how the Leafs 4th and even 3rd lines this year seem to be a bit of a carousel of players due to injuries but both lines have been very effective. Anyone here think that loser Simpson would ever say that about the Leafs? lol
