Just too big a mountain for this team to climb. They will pull back like Stevie did at the TDL and hope for better results next year.....again, (sigh). |

The TDL was a no win. The prices were insane. The team waited way too long to make the change they made, for sure. I have some optimism on ASP improving the D, we’ll see how that goes. But this team can’t win unless they score 3+ and even then it’s not a guarantee. And it sucks, for sure. We’re sighing, Buffalo’s screaming, and in the end only one of the teams that went all in at the TDL won’t regret the assets they gave up |

The entire dynamic changed under Todd Mac. Then we regressed into old, bad habits. Not sure how or why. This team cannot sustain 60min of hockey. Could be unknown injuries, conditioning, lack of focused recovery efforts......or, most likely, this team isn't built for the long haul.
There are legit heros on this team; Raymond, Kane, The Cat, Mo, Eddy....hell, even Johansson's shocked us all. Throw in Kasper. But even they are having issues. They have to overcome failing fill-in guys.
At the end of the season, I would love to see ASP hit our ice. But this team still needs about 50% turn-over; not re-signing some guys, waiving others, buying out more. Then, the savings needs to be spent wisely. I'm going out on a limb, but it might be the off-season to jump in with a no-BS splash, Marner or someone similar. I am NOT impressed with Mrazek. We have him for 2, so I expect this move was because Lyon's "priced" himself out of Detroit. IF....big IF, we got with a 3 G system, Cossa's coming up....and it's about damn time.
At the end of the day, thisteam is good - but just not good enough. The trigger was pulled on the coach, now some players need to go and a better, more driven and capable set of kids needs to rise up. |

Mornin'!
I'm glad that we didn't waste money, The Captain was right to step aside when the price to ante up was announced. We need to be able to replace the kids in GR that will most-likely be on the Big Club next season. But if we don't pay it at the TDL, I think we're forced to pay it in UFA.
The bottom line is we CANNOT out-score our mistakes. And we cannot run-n-gun with the Dallases, The Avs, etc... so something needs to change. |

I’m going to offer a thought on the drop off - 4 nations. After the 2 week break the team wasn’t the same. If you’ve seen the new CBA stuff they’re closing the league for 3 weeks next season for the Olympics. You’ve been in pro sports. All the players not involved will be dealing with set back. Yeah, we need turn over but there’s only so many guys you can buy out. Cossa may be ready, but the year under Watson has been good for that team. The LaLonde start was killing the room. It’s going to be tough no matter what. Ottawa came on strong, Florida, Tampa Bay, Toronto. Boston may finally be sliding out of the pic but we’ll see what happens

Agree. VAN wanted a 1st for Boeser, Philly wanted a 1st for Risto. Players that would have moved the needle for this team would have cost much more. |

I'd really like to see Lombardi get a call up. The Griffins and Cossa have found their groove again. It would be a huge loss for GR if they lost Lombardi... but the reality is he's ready for the call-up.. and he's a talented center. Detroit is goal-starved and needs to do something to fix it.
Danielson is not ready for primetime yet... but he does have all the tools. Next year will be his season to really shine. He's still an AHL rookie, no need to rush him. Was at Wednesday night's game... good to see the Griffins get back to their winning ways. Only one point out of first place in their division. |

Same boat. If he hadn’t been injured early he’d be up. Need to move Soderblom back down a couple lines and get Lombardi a look on the wing with Kasper meshing well on the other line |

A bit before 4N, you solicited opinions about in-season events. I was on the fence. Coming back after a lay-off takes time. "Game Shape" isn't a philosophical concept; it's real. Add in injury and increased focus on the SCPO....the whole "getting into Game Shape" blows a team out of the water. That team was us.
The off-season's going to be interesting because of what we need combined with what we are allowed to do. Dumping current guys depends on who's ready to come up as well as who's available in UFA. The trickle of kids will continue, but I'm really starting to wonder which of our guys will be on the downslope of their career (looking at Larkin....Kane, etc...). Let's face it; the clock's ticking and the fan base is getting "nervous" We're going to revolt if we mimic Buffalo (minus the run of 1st round draft choices thanks to the "lottery luck"...). Something's going to happen, needs to happen to get out of this SCPO glut. Clock's ticking....
Teams are making neck-breaking moves. The good thing is that we have a fairly stocked team in GR, some studs in Europe and in the NCAA. The trick is keeping a stock of draft choices to keep the train rollin'. It's a delicate balance, but there still needs to be reasonable trades & UFA signings to augment what we have.
The run post-4N has been a bitter disappointment. BUT this team's got a bright future. We just want the future to be NOW. |
