Out of all those cup winners, how many had a 100 pt player on their regular season roster. No cheating, don’t look it up. |

If we turn Kreider (meaning his 6.5m AAV +) into Chychrun, Id say thats a win.
I just dont know what to do with KAndre. I dont think hes earned that sizeable extension. - aecliptic
For KAndre, I would offer a 2 year deal with a very slight raise, unless we think we can get an adequate FA replacement for cheaper. I don’t think he has earned a gamble with a bunch of years. |

About one third to one half? Maybe less? Not a lot of players get 100+ points each season.
Crosby? Kucherov? MacKinnon? So probably less than half. |

Probably 3.
What they all had was an elite 1C and 1D and depth. All were top 10 5v5 except Washington |

Yeah I looked it up (after initially responding). The three players I pointed out were on pace for that much for 82 games but all missed time (or shortened COVID season). |

I was on the subway thinking about this Panarin discussion and thought...
I think if there was ever a sport where the Billy Beane philosophy could work, its in hockey. |

Is your point that Panarin should be moved because he’s paid too much for what he does? If that’s your point then go back to those teams you listed and see how many players they had at the same or higher cap % because that’s more relevant than point total. Seems silly to me to argue against 100pt scorers |

The point is guys that score 100+ points arent nearly as important to the bigger picture as some think.

The importance of 3 reliable and functioning lines is more important than having a 100pt scorer. Again, thats not to say that you dont need your go to guy in clutch situations. AND so many times in the playoffs, the clutch guys turn out to be the guys on the 3rd or 4th lines.
For example, Brady Tkachuk will probably never be a 100pt scorer, hell he probably wont ever score 90, but I would take a 75-80pt Brady Tkachuk 100 out of 100 times over Panarin. |

I happen to think miller could hit 100 pts next year with zib and laf. Zib gets about 90, and laf hits 70-80 with 70 goals between them
Miller 30g 70a
Zib 40g 50a
Laf 30g 50a
Since Mackinnon was brought up, and by no means am I comparing Laf to mackinnon, but Mac didn’t blow up until he played 300 games. His 1st four seasons weren’t anything spectacular. Point is, maybe there is hope still with Laf to blow up like a true 1OA pick can |

End of the day, COVID did us dirty because these guys were signed right before and the team ended up having to deal with a locked cap for 3 years. |

I think he is saying he'd rather have 3 lines that produce over a 100 point scorer. |

Because you're talking about cap %, fine you're not wrong about teams with star players. However, fortunately for other teams, especially if were going to talk about the recent ones, many of them had 2 things going for them:
1. Either old/existing contracts that wouldnt necessarily be affected by a frozen cap.
2. Star players on LTIR.
Because at the end of the day, were talking about this current core relative to the teams that have went on to win the cup.
None were as cap strapped as we were because of timing. So when we talk about contracts, Id put an asterisk next to it because we had our backs against the wall in terms of roster maneuverability. |

Imagine this...
COVID never happens. The season goes on, the salary cap goes up as planned our backs arent put against the wall and were able to resign Buchnevich. Buch maintains his rise to be an 80+ pt player.
The fallout from the Blais trade never happens. Spending the next 5 years looking for a 1st line RW for Ziba never occurs. Maybe LAF and Kakko spend some time in the AHL and arent thrust into the line up because we needed cheap contracts and bodies on the roster. |

Maybe they’ll be dead tired from travel and playing the Avs.
Then they play the Canucks and they can’t lose on Sam Rosen day
Get that elusive 3 game winning streak |
