No time to panic. No. Why start now!? It’s been the same thing for almost a decade with this core so anyone who is panicking and expecting better hasn’t been paying attention.

This team is not quite where Chicago was in terms of depth but at the high end, this team has just as much if not more fire power.

2009/2010, Kane led the team with 30 goals and 88 points. Toews was basically a 20-30 goal, 60 point player. We got 3-4 guys who can hit 40-60 goals and 90-100 points each and two of them are Selke candidates every year.

If a coach could just get the PP to be a top 5 PP (which should be automatic), that alone might be enough to get them deeper in the playoffs.

Chicago once won a Cup with Huet and Niemi in net. I mean, come on...

What coach do you think can make this group real Cup contender?

There is no coach that can “fix” this team. It’s the same with the Oilers. Sooner or later you have to look at the team make up and change it. Or just keep being good but never good enough.

I'm more worried about how they are playing and performing without .920+sv%

I'd like to think it's a lull because it is essentially garbage time for them as far as making the playoffs.

Unfortunately, this team has never shown the focus and caresi required to win, so it's difficult to believe there will be anything besides another 1st round exit.

They kind of have been. For the first time in a long time they have a real shutdown D pair and good goaltending. Carlo and OEL are fine.

They’ve had three opportunities to make big changes when Rielly, Willie and Matthews’ contracts came up. Matthews you have to extend, it looks like they got good value from Willie and Rielly was signed after a 68 point, +16 season. Obviously, the last one didn’t pan out but it wasn’t a crazy decision.

They’ve got two more opportunities to change the make up this summer. A bad postseason and there’s a good chance they make big changes.

Quenneville won a Cup with this blueline.

27 Johnny Oduya D 76 2 8 10
32 Michal Rozsival D 65 1 12 13
5 David Rundblad D 49 3 11 14
4 Nik Hjalmarsson D 82 3 16
7 Brent Seabrook D 82 8 23 31
2 Duncan Keith D 80 10 35 45
44 Kimmo Timonen D 16 0 0 0
57 T van Riemsdyk D 18 0 1 1

That defensive stratosphere isn't that far away if the Leafs continue to add.

After Keith and Seabrook, not nearly as good as you think they are.

But if you're going to sit there and tell me Johnny Oduya, David Rundblad, Michal Rozsival and a 40 year old Kimmo Timonen are one of a kind players, I've got a bridge to sell you. Niklas Hjalmarsson, solid player, but thrived under Quenneville and never after.
