For the love of god can this team please start on time in a game that absolutely requires it?
Step on the Panthers throats, take 2 points from them, and put them that much farther back in the rear view mirror. |

8 x 4. - Rare_Jewel
At age 34, Steven Stamkos had 40 goals and 81 points in 78 games which led to him getting $8m x 4 from Nashville. That's basically 42G-43A in 82GP.
At age 34, John Tavares is pacing out to 43G, 42A over 82GP.
It's awfully close.
About the only argument against the contract you propose is that with the rise in cap it could be $8.7m to be equivalent.
I still say that if you're paying him on merit and age, then a 4 year contract would look something like: $8m, $6m, $5m, $4m for an AAV of $5.75 - and the truth is that every year of that deal is probably higher than he really should be paid but @ $5.75m it's not really hurting you that much if the cap does rise as anticipated.

You're right, he probably asks for 9.5 or 10 everywhere else and asks for 8 from the Leafs and pretends it's a discount.
What is the maximum amount his contract can decline each season? Whatever the maximum cap circumvention is allowed, give him an 6 year contract if you have to and get that cap hit down to 5 AAV. He's not worth more than 6 AAV long term.
If you can have him "retire" early, that would help too. Promise him some BS front office job like Spezza had to give him his final two years in back pay. |

Just because Stamkos got that doesn’t mean he’s living up to it. I’ll bet Nashville regrets that deal. He’s been worth half that this year. |

Exactly why the Leafs would be stupid to give Tavares anything over 6 AAV.
But it doesn't mean a team out there, desperate to add a veteran top-six C won't throw the same or more than Nashville did.

my guess would be getting a lower aav by going an extra year or maybe 2 ..up to 6.
puts him at 40yo

I’ve seen the future - JT will get $5.5M per for 3 years. He will then sign 1 year deals with Buds until he moves into front office.

Yes. People who have played the game. Not fatty geeks with stats.
Could be wrong - but I’d guess that the last - let’s say 10 Cup winners - have an ex player (Pro not Jr…actual player) in the front office. |

Most players do not make good coaches or executives. Look at all the idiotic contracts handed out. The league is successful in spite of itself. |

That would be a deal. If this boy ends up 75P+ and has a good playoffs he’ll be $6.5-7 for 3 years is my guess. |
