I could have sworn that I saw a Knies interview where he said it wouldn't matter if someone gave him an offer sheet, he wouldn't sign it...maybe I didn't see that but there is that factor..he still has to sign it.

I think what you saw was Chris Johnson from TSN reporting on their Insider Trading that neither Knies nor his agent were interested in going the offer sheet route this off-season, and that the Leafs were confident that they will have the cap space to make it work with Knies. That was about 2 weeks ago.
Knies is not going anywhere. If anything he has replaced Tavares as a member of the "Core Four" in Toronto. |

if your going to offer-sheet Knies, be prepared to fork over four 1st round picks. |

What do you think the cap hits of Marner, Tavares, and Knies next year?
Leafs have $70M against the cap already. Marner should get minimum 11.75M per season. Tavares MINIMUM, if he takes a discount and goes 3-4 years, it should be around 6-7M. That means about $88M will already be committed. This leaves about $7M total in cap space. Here's what remains:
Matthew Knies (FMV is 1 year @5M minimum)
Nicholas Robertson (FMV is 1 year @2.5 minimum)
This doesn't include Pontus Holmberg. How do you see it? |

Marner 13.5M x 8
Knies 8 x 8
Tavares 5 x 4
Nylander traded.

Leafs cap hit for next year is under $68 million....not trying to be picky, but with the Leafs cap situation what it is, and extra $2 million is huge.
Kampf has 1 foot out the door and should be traded....that frees up $2.4 million.....replace him with a cheap contract and you save about $1.5 million.
So roughly $29 million to work with, assuming the $95.5 million cap projection holds true. With that in mind.....and I am making guesses here.......$12.75 million for Marner......$6.75 million for Tavares......$7 million for Knies....that's $26.5 million and the Leafs are still about $2.5 million under the cap.
If they need to free up more, Jarnkrok could be dealt, or even Domi. You easily decide to move them if keeping them means you lose Knies.
Am I missing anything? |

You have about $200k in buried cap hit for Reaves, you want to resign Lorentz - probably around $1m; you want to resign or replace Robertson and Holmberg. Whether that's them or through promotion or another low contract, you're still looking at another $2m or so for those two roster spots.
Right now I see:
Matthews: 13.25
Marner: 12.5
Nylander: 11.5
Knies: 8
Tavares: 7
Domi: 3.75
Kampf: 2.4
Jarnkrok: 2.1
Laughton 1.5
McMann: 1.35
Lorentz: 1
Robertson (or replacement): 1
Holmberg (or replacement): 1
That's 66.35 on Forwards
Rielly: 7.5
Tanev: 4.5
McCabe: 4.492
OEL: 3.5
Carlo: 3.485
Benoit: 1.35
Myers: 850k
That's another 25.68m on Defense
Stolarz: 2.5
Woll: 3.67
And 6.17m on goalies.
If they don't resolve the Benning contract or Reaves, they'll have $300k in buried cap.
That's $98.5m which is $3m over.
You could go with 12 forwards and save $1m. As you suggested, you could trade Kampf (who has a 10 team NTC) - but who's lining up for an overpaid 4th line player? You could trade Jarnkrok as well but the challenge there is that you do weaken the bottom 6 and want to be cautious not to weaken it too much.
But obviously they are going to keep Knies first and foremost. |

Couple other spots needed, even if you go cheap, another couple million.
I think Marner is going to get paid significantly more than 12.75.
May not be a popular idea, but I think you need to consider trading Rielly if it looks like you can't afford everyone. |

I doubt the Leafs will go higher than Matthews' $13.25 million, thus my $12.75 guess.
I would not like to see Rielly traded, but agree on the point that trades can and will be done to keep Knies in house.
But for now, who cares? Go Leafs!

The issue is, if someone offer sheets him, long term w significant money, and the Leafs match, it blows all other plans up. Thats always been the danger w the Leafs over the last 5 years. If you top heavy, your bottom six suffers. If they beef up the bottom six, someone has to up on top. And, I don’t think the cap will go up as projected. The TV situation, where most of the revenue is drawn is in a tough spot. Between different streaming services, cable, and gate revenue, I just don’t see the money being there. I could be wrong, just my gut feeling.
