I don't like Steve Vai but he definitely has talent.

I get that you like the guy but if you want an objective opinion on his playing ability, he's definitely not awful but he's not even close to as good as a lot of people posted on here. His riffs are very bland, the accenting on them is very obvious and it's mostly just chugging. His leads are ok a lot of the time. He obviously knows how to stay in key and he has some speed but his phrasing is pretty basic. He has no dynamics. I think his tone is kind of dry and it almost reminds me of a solid state practice amp.

I like Eric Clapton's playing more than Satriani's but I'm not about to declare him technically better than Satriani.

Well the track posted by Nordic is still pretty much the same chugging. He has melodic moments I like but they're not exactly complex. Like I said before, he's defintiely got some speed and I like that he bothered to learn his diatonic scales but there's still very little phrasing and you can pretty much guess what note he's going to play before he plays it.

I'll bite though, throw something on here from him that'll blow me away from technical ability. This isn't doing it. It's a decent tune compared to a lot of other metal...the guitar sounds better in this track too but this is still not going to show every other guitar player on this board up.



Whether you like this jam or not, both of these guys are displaying dynamics, phrasing, nuance and a very large assortment of little guitar tricks.
