it must feel great to be 18th in the NHL, 5th in the division and picking 14th in the draft
I know the Leafs have been very successful with that strategy - senstroll
What does feel great to see a team playing great hockey for the past quarter of a season, and seeing younger players step up and perform with a number of veterans out of the line up.
With Ottawa further down the re-build road than the leafs, they will finish higher in the standings, and will be picking well after the leafs, but the goal in Ottawa is not to sit at the bottom of the standings year after year like the Oilers and stockpile high picks, they've got playoff aspirations in the next few years.
The "leafs strategy" has more to do with poor scouting and poor drafting and developing, and not necessarily finishing just short of the playoffs.
Ottawa has two of the top four scoring rookies in the NHL, and neither were first rounders. Stone was selected in the Sixth round and Hoffmann in the Fifth round.
Other Non-first round draft pick contributors include Condra (7th) Wiercioch (2nd) Borowiecki (5th) Gryba (3rd) .
If fact last night TSN pointed out that both the Wings and the Sens had 18 players each, in their respective lineups that were drafted and developed by the Wings and Sens.

Ottawa totally Dominated the game vs the Wings last night, and made the Detroit goaltender look like the re-incarnation of Hasek.
Rookie Mark Stone could have had three or more goals last night, and was the best player on the ice for the entire game.
He now leads the NHL in takeaways, is in the top ten in over scoring in the NHL since the beginning of this year, is fourth in points among rookies, not bad for a Sixth round pick. - Doppleganger
How lovely.
It it weren't for your goaltender going on a fluke streak, you'd be bottom 5 in the NHL. |

It was more than just our (AHL) third string goaltender going on streak, it was the team as a whole embracing the new system that Cameron brought in.
Last night was a great example of sticking to the game plan and despite the chance for contending for the playoffs was toast with 5 mins to go in the game, and the Bruins winning in regulation.
Ottawa has not been shutout all season, it looked like was going to happen for the first time last night. But they scored, thanks in part to Mark Stone Screening the Detroit goaltender, and sending the game to a shootout.

Sure it was.
Just like the crazy run JS Aubin went on in 06 was the team as a whole. |

I know for a fact that you've not watched the last 25 games the Senators have played, otherwise you'd never assume it's just the AHL goaltender, and then try to convince us, who've watched the games, otherwise.
Goals have to be scored to win games, and none of the Senator goaltenders have many goals this season.

You're right, I have not watched every single one of the last 25 games. I ahven't watched a single game in it's entirety.
But the NHL app on my phone streams any and every game I want, so I frequently turn games on, on my phone, even when I'm on the couch watching something else.
I've seen enough, I know the Sens are still garbage, and they went on a run due to a hot goalie.
JS Aubin Hamburgler.
Here is a question for you. Do you think the Jr Burger will ever win 10 or 15 games in a short stretch ever again? |

Who knows? Probably not, but who can say.
When the Senators went out and swept California, they knew they had to insulate their AHL goaltender, who had never started an NHL game before, and probably really took Cameron's system to the next level, and it resulted in wins for the team.
It also helped that the Bruins stumbled for a number of games allowing Ottawa to rein them in.
Since the sweep of California, the Senators just kept the same game plan, and there were no passengers in any of the games.
All in all it's a team game, and everyone has contributed in the past 25 games or so, and for you, the only one, to think it's 100% a fluky run by a goaltender is just laughable.

I guess the NHL did not share your opinion, on what is a fluke or not.

NEW YORK – Ottawa Senators goaltender Andrew Hammond, Calgary Flames center Jiri Hudler and Minnesota Wild goaltender Devan Dubnyk have been named the NHL's "Three Stars" for the month of March. FIRST STAR – ANDREW HAMMOND, G, OTTAWA SENATORS Hammond went 10-1-1 with a 2.09 goals-against average and .930 save percentage to help the Senators (38-26-12, 88 points) complete an 11-3-2 March... |

Have to agree with this. SA are down, possession stats are up and its the young guys driving these numbers. Dave Cameron seems to be the catalyst for this change in philosophy which is tailored to the players that are on the roster. |

its seems the sens had a pretty good formula that was successful... why coaches react to a 1 game sample over 10 or 15 good ones I dont get.
I hope PW is traded by the sens...is underrated... Leafs should try to get him - senstroll
Reminds me a lot of Franson. Big guy, not physical but can move the puck and create offense. Although PW numbers don't reflect that currently. |

I'd be surprised if Ottawa initiates a trade of one of their Dmen before training camp.
All season all we heardis that they have to many Dmen, and they have to trade one.
I think they'll assess what they have in the fall and if they decide they need to move one, will do so then at the earliest.
Cowen will have to "win" his way back into a top four position, and Phillips may end up being the odd man out more often than not.

probably a good example, Franson is one of those guys who doesnt pass the eye test very well for most fans..but has really good stats. PW to me is like a Stralman or Muzzin... kind of under the radar..for a lot of people

His stock has risen under Cameron, and may have played himself out of any of the rumoured trades we've been hearing for most of the season. |

Do you have an update on their chances of making the playoffs?
I'll take weighted or 50/50. Just not sure why you suddenly stopped posting them. |

Even I can do the math, 2 points back of three teams, all with three games remaining, and Ottawa needs to pass at least one of those teams............meaning that one of those three teams need to lose two game in regulation, while Ottawa needs at least 5 of six points.
Odds are not in Ottawa's favour, below 30% when you have to rely on other teams to lose. Ottawa does NOT control their own fate, as all three teams (2 points ahead) all have the same magic number (4) to eliminate Ottawa.
Can't complain about the top quality of Hockey Ottawa fans have been enjoying since the All Star break, every game has meant something of substance inthe standing, and the last three will too.
At least the Senators didn't have to make up some pretend 7 game series with their last 7 games of the season like the leafs are doing, just to keep the announcers interested in calling the games.

Don't you find it concerning that the Sens had a chance to take control of their fate, and blew it against a team picking in the top 5?
I recall you making fun of he Habs for losing to teams beneath them not to long ago, when you were gung ho on the playoff wagon.

Weren't there some comments about a team playing for pride, and playing together?
Two losses in 8 days to the Leafs. Sens pride does it again.
The Leafs beat the Sens when the chips are down, and that never seems to change. The players change, the management changes, the owner changes, doesn't matter. Leafs beat the Sens when push comes to shove. |
