You're 100% correct. There were a number of leaf fans on this site, a few years back after Riemer had played about 35 games at the end of the previous season, who were saying that he was the Starter they've been looking for...............and then they said the same thing after they brought in a Back up goaltender from the Kings, and now he was the "sure thing" and was the Starter they've been looking for.

So yes, goaltenders are hard to predict, until they've played enough games at the NHL level, as a starter, to really know what you've got.

So O'Connor will show what he can do in the AHL next year, and then in a couple of years he might have a chance to do the same in the NHL.


BTW, O'Connor is a toronto boy, was wondering why the leafs did not make a push to sign him? Did not read that they were interested, any insight?

Melnyk has stated many times. publicly, that he will spend money on salaries as the re-build continues and the GM needs to lock up developing players that they want top keep long term when their contracts come up for renewal.

“I’m not the least embarrassed about us spending at the bottom,” Melnyk said Monday afternoon at his 11th annual charity skate for kids. “I’m happy about it because we’ll be able to spend more in the future and some can’t. Some are stuck.”

Melnyk said he and general manager Bryan Murray spoke as recently as Monday morning.

“We’re not in any way restricted,” said Melnyk. “(Murray) has not come back to me and he said there’s nothing out there that he could actually spend money on.”

That’s not to say the Senators aren’t prepared to increase their payroll. With a number of players facing restricted free agency this summer Melnyk says they won’t have any choice but to spend.

As for that lovely quote at the end, it's a sugar coated version of "I don't want to spend money, and the only time I will is if I'm forced to". Even Ballard had to pay his teams. As for saying there was nothing to spend money on in the market, some of the signings the Leafs made last summer netted them a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, a prospect, and some other minor picks.

That's not nothing. That's money well spent.

I was just comparing him to his contemporaries by the numbers. Didn't say anything one way or the other about him.
