He's played himself into the line up.

Did not see that coming, and thought if anyone was going to come up for good, that it was going to be Borowiecki or Claesson.

His turnover last night, turned a game the Sens were carrying the play to the Wings, into a loss that may well have killed any playoff hopes the Sens had before the game.

Everyone has growing pains I guess, and develops at different rates.

Which is why following "the XXXX model" is a silly notion. You're never going to be able to predict whether Ceci makes it out of Junior, or how long thereafter for him to become a top flight defender, let alone whether Lauren Pronger likes a city or Kris Letang has a freak medical setback.

After 17 games it would appear that the Senator's rebuild is proceeding rather well. If anything Senator fans should be concerned that short term success will lead to a loss of a potential lottery pick.

The Leafs on the other hand are now 7 years into their rebuild and you have to wonder if they really have an overall strategy that will see them actually emerge as a serious competitor at some point.

The Oil are now in the third year of their rebuild and it is clear that they will be a serious team in the very near future.

Overall, I think that it would be wise for the Senators to move Spezza and some other pieces in order to better accelerate their rebuild. If the Leafs do not find a better means of being competitive they should seek a more traditional form of rebuild. The Oilers do not need to do anything other than continue in the direction they are headed. I am at a loss to try and figure out what the game plan is in Calgary.

He makes the team in 2011 -12 and is one of Ottawa's top four defencemen.

Has what was expected to be a season ending injury in October of 2012, comes back probably a little earlier than he should have, and plays a few games in the regular season and two rounds of the playoffs.

Sits out training camp, before signing a lucrative four year contract, and now has gone the way of Tyler Myers, maybe a little worse.

If I were the coach, he'd be sitting and one of the two other Defence-men would be playing right now.

Travis Yost wondered whether Cowen-Gryba would be a top pairing in the AHL on twitter last night.

Maybe he's at where Myers was a year and a half ago but in my opinion Myers has been starting to put it back together recently.

I'm sure if either of these D men were put on waivers, the Oilers would snap them up.

Once more this isn't really a criticism of the oilers, as much as misplaced aggression about how guys like Spatso used the optimism in Edmonton as an avenue to criticize Burke's plan with the Leafs.

There are a ton of things wrong with the Oilers, but people only seem to get smug/froth at the mouth because of what trolls say, not because of what management has or hasn't done.

At this point, they're likely a better 3rd pairing than what the Oilers have, but they wouldn't solve many problems with the Oilers long term.

In any case, I'd say that's a fairly irrelevant point. Aren't the Oilers supposed to be the low water mark for NHL dmen?

Can't see a trade for Shea Weber that doesn't destroy the makeup of the team.

What possible reason would Nashville have for trading Weber if they didn't get Taylor Hall ++ back?

Unfortunately, I think we need to happen on our top dman with a bit of luck as opposed to fetching the established guy.

Honestly, I think Toronto gets a bum rap because of how long it took them to get the current management team in place and fully start rebuilding. Right now they have the pieces for a very strong core, but will just have to finish it off by developing these young guys and filling in any gaps that are identified over the next season or two.

The Sens rebuild has a rather visible starting point - we started dumping contracts and stocking up on picks - we set up our coaching staff to have a number of "teachers" in it - now it's just up to the prospects to develop.

In a few years we'll see if either team has done enough to contend...

A Pretty good assessment.

Ottawa has a few more pieces (in Binghamton) to their puzzle that should be with the team for next season. Also, Curtis Lazar could push for job with Ottawa, depending on how many jobs (at forward) are available come September. He is ranked, today, as the third best player not playing in the NHL, but the jump from junior straight into the NHL is not made by many players.

Not sure what players the leafs have playing for the marlies that may push for roster spot next season.

Forwards: Leivo, D'Amigo, Ashton, Broll and Devane all stand to have a good look.
Defense: Granberg, Percy are the top contenders for a spot

A quick look at CapGeek shows me that there are about 6 leafs who will be UFAs this July.

How many roster spots do you think will open up, and be possibly filled by some of the prospects you listed?

Depends on who they're targeting in UFA / through trades.

For example, it wouldn't surprise me to see one of Gardiner/Franson traded, and the team targetting one of the big stay-at-home guys in free agency... but if none are available, Granberg will likely get a call.

On the forward side of things, If Bolland , Raymond, and Kulemin are asking too much, Holland and Leivo could wind up taking their spots, with the Leafs possibly bringing back Komarov, or bringing up D'Amigo.

The 4th line could see the likes of Broll/Ashton/D'Amigo as well.
