sorry the trade you propose to acquire carter is absurd...caps would be giving up entirely too much.

Of course they would have to give up a ton to get a deal of this nature done.
The idea is start with what the Jackets paid, top it, then scale it back.
I use Carter as the perfect example of the Center the Caps need and the fact that they can afford to put together a package to acquire one.
While it's unreasonable to assume a deal as large as I suggested would be proposed, it's an edge I feel the Caps have in that they have a surplus of 1st and 2nd round picks over the next 2 years as well as a cheap replacement for Semin, even if he walks for free.
There are, of course, plenty of other C's who could fit the bill, but Carter has the size, speed and offensive production to buoy this lineup. There are comparables, but I doubt they would come any cheaper. |

I already know your reasons why, but I'd be curious to know who you would target in this department?
Again, I used Carter as an example of the type of C this team needs to add. |

Getzlaf, if he becomes available. I guess it depends on how the Ducks play out the next 2-3 weeks. I don't see Carter as being all that much of an upgrade over Laich, to be perfectly honest with you, other than the fact that Carter has played more C in the NHL. He's got far more offensive instinct, but so does Semin. I don't think he'll come close to his career numbers again.
We've got to get rid of Semin before the deadline, in my opinion. |

I imagine if they do that type of deal, they'd want prospects/picks back, with a roster player or two?
How do you feel about trading Eakin: if that was the foundation of the trade, I'd be fine as Carter is still pretty young.
Eakin, Schultz, Knuble (more a salary dump for both sides), and 1st (which one?)
For Carter (and a pick?)
How would the Lines work out if this somehow took place?
OV-Backs-Carter (He had the occasional shift on wing in Philly didn't he)

Assuming Semin is gone ofcourse; I don't really like the idea of 3mil Ward toiling away on the third line. Perhaps it's time to pull a Versteeg and just cut your losses.
We could make the 3rd our young energy line (ie: next year Kuznetsov would fill in just fine)
4th is vet/special teams
edit: I somehow missed the rest of the post where you actually discuss the trade lol; and yea I assume that my trade is not in Columbus' liking at this point;
if it hinges on Laich, I'd say no - that effort last night speaks volumes about the guy, and while Carter is talented, he seems lazy/unmotived. |

If your hoping to "get rid" of Semin your going to have to make a nice package to land someone like Getzlaf |

Yeah, his 28 points and soft play will be missed. Semin may very well become a ppg player again, but it's not going to be with the Capitals. |

If the caps want to replace soft play with soft play (especially the playoffs) then Jeff is your man.
I was once a huge fan of Jeff, but saw way too many floater games (similar to Semin) and a real - seemingly - lack of motivation to succeed in the playoffs. To be fair he did have injury issues as well.
I don't see the Caps having the "risk buffer" right now to take the chance Carter turns his career around in Was. with such a high pricetag.

Good points. If I'm the Caps, I try to acquire Iginla and Giordano for Semin and a couple good picks. I'm not a fan of soft lackadaisical players, and Carter falls into that mold...
IMO, Jay Feaster is the worst GM and is always ready to get fleeced in a deal |

The price for Iggy and Gio will include much more than Semin and a couple of picks. |

I think adding Carter would be a good addition, but not at the expense of Laich. I know he is having a bit of an off year, but he is a hear and soul type guy that is loved by the fans.
With the emergence and hopeful further development or Orlove (and assuming Green comes back to form and at a reasonable contract next year), is Carlson expendable? Could the deal be:
Carlson + Eakin + 1st + 2nd |

You're probably right. I think the Av's 1st rounder, a 2nd and a 3rd plus Semin would be very attractive to the Flames. Throw in a soft D-man and Feaster would begin to salivate.... |

Cap need to wait for Ovi and Green to return and drop Semin. Your team is good and this coming from a fan of the Bolts (que "they have fan" jokes). |

For Carter? I don't know. I mean, I just don't want to see more soft play. Semin does anything possible to avoid getting hit. Do we need two guys like that in our top-6? Plus, once Carlson goes, guess who replaces him in the lineup? Jeff Schultz...
Better to point these assets at Anaheim, me thinks... |

I'm curious Steven... Why do you feel like you'd need to better what the Jacket's paid to get Carter.
When they acquired him he was coming off a career year and a deep playoff run... now he's floundering and underperforming.
Clearly he's worth less now than he was then...
If the Jacket's truly feel like he'll rebound and return to form with their organization, then he wouldn't be available...
If you're GMGM all you need to do is offer a package that may have a chance of helping the Jackets more long term than if they were to keep Carter in the fold.
The past transaction shouldn't have anything to do with it. That's a sunk cost. Carter today is a mid aged scoring centerman in a serious funk, and on a very long contract. Yes you need to make a competitive offer, but he's not going to command the premium that he did a year ago. At least in my opinion. |

Tell you the truth the caps would be smart to get Carter, it would make me laugh. don't buy in that he plays soft and don't care crap. People who say that read too many Tim P. articles, which its a fact he didn't like him or richards. Carter is a very good goal scorer and very good defensive. Is he going to wow you with a check? No. He will bring a ton to the team though. At a cap hit of 5.2 he is a steal. |
