Saw the stat lines—looked pretty good, despite not putting up any points. I think I may have to root for Buffalo now (in the east).

Kassian looked pretty good in his first game, though conditioning looks to be sub par.

Coho had a few chances to get on the score sheet. Made some nice plays. Had some solid defensive zone play. We are excited to see what he has once he gets comfortable with his new team & builds a little chemistry.

The knock on Kassian in the AHL & NHL is that he is lazy. He doesn't show up every game. We had very high hopes for him. Hopefully, with a little maturity, he will develop into the power forward everyone hoped he would be. He has the size & skill but he doesn't have the heart yet.

Thank you Pete!!!!

You certainly picked a great time to come out with a blog. No disrespect meant to Ian or the Hodgson faithful in either Vancouver or Buffalo, but IMO it was the right move for our team. Kassian was not brought in to replace COHO, but to give a boost to what the organization as a whole was sorely lacking. ( not to mention Grags )

I somehow hope the Jets can nail down a playoff spot.

Hopefully, the leadership group in Vancouver will demand much more of him.

That's exactly what he needs which the current Sabres lack.

I hear ya, but you took a big step in acquiring one on deadline day.

That was epic Pete.

I'd say you summed the whole situation perfectly. Once the fanbase takes the emotion out of it, they will realize it's the absolute right move. We can discuss whether the timing was right (debatable) or they could've got more (doubtful) til the cows come home. Bottom line: it's done and it's time to move on. Good luck Cody. We also traded away one of the few real leaders in Gaustad. Oh well, something to look for July 1st.

You should have included him in the Hodgson deal, for both 4ths.

Good perspectives Pete. Thanks for chiming in. Appreciate (and miss) your objectivity.

Hopefully your point about Gillis doing Hodgson (and by extension his agent) a big favor by trading him out of Vancouver doesn't get lost in all the hysteria. Hodgson is an RFA after next season and will be able to justify much higher salary demands as a first or second line center in Buffalo than he ever would have been able to get in Vancouver.

I wanna believe the Canucks were targeting Gaustad but ultimately weren't willing to part with the 1st rounder Nashville gave up. That's a pretty steep price for a rental fourth line center when you think about it, so there must have been some serious competition for him. Or Nashville was led to believe there was. I can see Nashville wanting to make sure they had the upper hand when it came to size and wouldn't want the Canucks to get him.

Pahlsson makes more sense to me as a consolation pickup rather than a primary target.

I also agree... I believe Ott was the number 1 choice... and things fell from there. Someone just said in the garth blog that gaustad has 0 goals in almost 40 playoff games Yikes!

I think we traded away Trevor Linden v2.0 for Stan Smyl v2.0 ---- we had enough skill players... we need Steamers!

(Not to be confused with John Shorthouse constantly saying that Salo just laid a soft dump in the corner. Totally different kind of steamer)

By the way, as soon as Costco has waffles on safe, I hope we see a barrage of them at the ACC soon.

And we need for waffle gifs!

Conditioning? The same could have been said for Hodgson tonight.

Probably had more to do with long flights.

Great blog Pete! Always loved your work.

I agree with most of your points. I still think that Gillis could have maybe tried to dangle Cody to a few other Eastern general managers just to see what else he could have gotten. I'll admit that finally after a couple of days that in getting over the emotional side of the trade and can now see why Gillis pulled the trigger.

I don't like the timing of the deal at all though, I don't see Kassian as a top 9 forward on this team in the playoffs like Cody would have been, do why not wait until the draft and make this move then? Who knows, maybe package him with Schneider and get a more proven, young top 6 power forward or get some other great offers from teams that wanna shake things up after missing the playoffs or an early post season exit.

Just my two cents now that I'm looking at this a little more rationally. I'm still against this trade though.

I also question the timing of the trade... I think that if Cody had remained a Canuck through the playoffs, and Kassian had remained a part-time player for Buffalo (who won't even be in the playoffs), by the summer a Hodgson for Kassian straight up trade would have been laughable...

We probably could have snagged another valuable asset from Buffalo in the summer even if Hodgson & Kassian were still the crux of the deal. No idea why this deal had to be done now...
