The ony change I would make to that proposal is I'd give 3 points for an overtime win:

3 points for a win in regulation or overtime WRO
1 point for a win in the Shootout WS
0 points for a loss

I won't bother calculating how that would change the current standings, since that would be pointless. The new arithmetic itself would change the way that games are played, especially late in the third period of a tie game, and during the overtime.

If Roger Neilson was still around, I can almost guarantee he'd try pulling his goalie at some point during an overtime (not during a delayed penalty) against a team from the other conference.

The problem with zero points in a shootout loss is, you at least got one point in a tie. In a shoot out loss, you make it 65 minutes, which is the same thing as a game ending in a tie. You just go a bit further to get a winner. My two cents.

Also.. what if you're down 4-1 in the 3rd and come back to secure a shootout loss? That point means something.

i think they should just take out the Shootouts and have a 5 minute OT and if nothing is decided after OT it would be a tie (if you win in OT 2pts lose in OT 0pts)

I don't usually respond to Ek's posts, but I feel I have to on this subject. I have the best solution to get rid of 3 point games, and the hoaky shoot-out.

What everyone needs to know isthat ties are not games where no team wins. You have to look at point potential to truely understand this. A team with a lead (if they win the game) gets 2 points. However, if that team gives up the tying goal, only recieves 1 point. That difference is -1. On the flip side, a team trailing (and eventually loses) gets 0 points. But if they should happen to score the tying goal, they end up with 1 point. So the difference is +1. Now, instead of W, L, T columns the league should have W, L, T+, T-. The tie breaker on points is the team with the most T+ points, meaning thay have come back to tie games the most.

It is so obvious that I can't understand why no-one else has ever thought about it. Oh yea, I know why. It would mean the fans need to have some smarts, and Bettman wants corporate sales of tickets, so the stadiums are filled with people who don't have a clue what is going on.

Here's my 1st suggestion:

3 points for a win in reg time.

2 points for the win in OT, loser gets ZERO

1 point for the winner in a shootout, the loser gets ZERO.

SIMPLE
2 points for a win (regardless if it was in Regulation, Overtime or a Shootout)
0 points for a loss

(I almost thought about 1 point for an Overtime or Shootout win - similar system to yours but that would go against my simplicity point of view).
