Lets see what Stamkos will be making at 34 yrs old then we can debate it.

Lets see when he hits the UFA market.

He will be 27 years old at that time.

- stveshdy

See that right there is why I can't agree with any of you guys. It's oh this oh that oh he plays in the playoffs so he gets a hall pass for underwhelming in the regular season. Geez did you ever think if he wasn't on the FLyers or a playoff team how bad it would look?

I miss the days where money was not a concern when discussing a player's contribution.

The salary cap sucks.

Edit: yeah, Gomez sucks.

- Pecafan Fan

Well Gomez has a noticeable point total in the postseason so I guess you guys should be happy with him too.

If you go by the last CBA, the Compliance buyout was only available for the first year. I highly doubt the Players Association is going to go for one every year for each team. That's 30 players a year.
- MJL

Ah gotcha. I haven't looked into the buy out thing at all and didnt realize it was a 1 time thing. I thought it was proposed to be a yearly option for 1 player per team, which is why i didn't think it would happen.

Well then you agree. Briere was valuable in the past, but the money could be spent in a better way going forward... So IF an amnesty cluase came up, you use it on him... Better yet... If you have 1 amnesty buyout per the entire CBA, you wait to use it until you have too... So if 2 years from now Bryz is aweful and Briere is still producing you use it on him... If Bryz is still doing good, and you need the cap space you use it on Briere...
- RooNosHockey

You make that move bc Briere is 34 years old and the Flyers have younger talent that needs to stay. You dont cut your youth for a player who will be coming to the end of his career after his current deal runs out. However, that doesnt mean Briere didnt earn his money while he was here during the playoffs and regular season.

Who's available is irrelevant. How about this Steven Stamkos is one mill more than Briere. So Briere is only worth one mill less?
- JoeRussomanno

You can go both ways with that. How about Ville Leino at 4.5, or Mikhail Grabovski at 5.5?

I think we can all agree that Leino was overpaid. Although he had a big playoffs the year before.

Cause you cant compare a 22 year old who never hit UFA to a 34 year old Briere who has hit the market. The two are completely different. If you name me another player around his age then it would make more sense to me.

You're not really comparing Brière with Gomez, are you?

Well you didn't exactly throw out all that criteria when you asked for someone available either did you? Next I suppose we will have to make sure they are both the same height and weight.

This is the first year that you can make the argument that he's been underwhelming in the regular season.

And it's not that he plays great in the playoffs, it's that he plays exceptional. In 2010, he almost broke Wayne Gretzsky's record for most points in a Stanley Cup Final with 12. He was perhaps the biggest catalyst in that cup run - and a viable Conn Smythe candidate.

Largely due to Briere.

I just went back and looked at players that are near his age and higher cap hits. Here we go.

Lecavlier 31, Heatley 31, Gomez 32, Thornton 32, Marleau 32, Iginla 34, Datsyuk 33, Richards 31.

Those are players who we can compare him to. All those guys are making more money then Briere. Now would you rather have those guys over Briere? I could name a few I would rather have but the cost is more.

Yes I know this, but the issue was saying how great Briere was b/c of playoff performance when the other guy is good in the playoffs too and help a team win a cup. Yet the one with the ring gets lambasted unlike someone else.

Nope second year. The second year he was big in the playoffs so he got a pass.
Ok so what I've learned today is a player can do jack squat all year as long as his team gets into the playoffs then he can perform. Got it.

Because Gomez's regular season woes are far worse than briere. Didnt he go a year without scoring a goal? Something like that.

Gomez is not even close to 40 points this season. And his cap hit is $7,357,143.

11 points.

You're blowing it out of proportion. If briere made 7.3 on the cap and had 11 points then I'd be pissed too.
