Bill Meltzer: Flyers Gameday: 3/20/12 vs. Panthers - bmeltzer
On paper this is the start of a favorable stretch of games. Panthers, Caps, Habs, Bolts, Leafs and Senators to close out March. The heavy lifting will be in April. After the Sens, which is the start of yet another weekend matinee back-to-back, they have the Pens, Rangers, Sabres and close the regular season against Pittsburgh.
They have to take advantage of the weaker teams now, not only to get the points, but to continue the roll they are on and hit the last four games and playoffs with momentum. |

Not much reaction to losing Mezzy for the rest of the year...
Is he that out of favor? Or does the collective HB conscience just feel its not that important given the way Gusty and others (i.e. MAB / Manning) have filled in? |

We were bummed, but I think the secrecy about the injury had us all kind of prepared for bad news. Aren't we always waiting for the next injury shoe to drop? |

What can you do? Nothing but keep on playing. Team needs Kubina to come back effective and healthy and to be lucky enough to avoid other long-term injuries on defense. Meszaros has had a very inconsistent season but was playing some of his best hockey of the season prior to the injury.

This year has been a real doozie for injury losses, no doubt. I guess folks have just become a bit numb to such news at this point. |

The bush league officiating is almost enough for me to cancel my NHL CI and never buy another NHL product ever again. If a league has rules that aren't enforced consistently and fair then why bother? |

"What I absolutely don't like on this hit by Niklas Kronwall is that Kronwall didn't just turn his back to make an exceptionally hard check on a vulnerable player but elevated his entire torso to the point that when contact was made both of Kronwall's skates were off the ice."

The way the defense has been plagued with injury, yet guys keep battling on, reminds me a hell of a lot of the 04 squad... and that was one of my all time favorites! |

How does injury / missed time (at a very critical point in the season) affect him in relation to possible off-season moves to make room for Carle's big raise or off-season big name acquisition?
I wonder if he'll be overlooked if the younger guys continue to fill in during his absence. I kind of thought that he may be a bubble resource in terms of next year anyway if more cap space needs to be shed for other moves. |

From the reports that were that he was seen walking around with a limp and was not skating, that showed, to me anyway, that he had a very serious injury. I was not suprised at all to hear about his back surgury. |

with home games against Florida, Washington, Montreal, Tampa then a game in Toronto, how many points do you (or anyone) think is reasonable? I'd like to see 8 |

I have an opportunity to watch tonights game, I hope it's not a trap game. Need the points.
Shame about Mezzy. Hopefully Kubinan can get back but with who they've got now, they're playing well.
Go Flyers.
with that said, 15-2 Panthers. |

I don't want to make it today's discussion, but thanks for the link. It was an interesting read, and I think he's spot on about the hit on Jakub. I can't say for the other ones, I didn't see that Edmonton game. |

Yeah, when I heard he was still limping I figured it wasn't going to be good. It sucks, but that's the way the cookie crumbles. |

I'm going on record as saying as goes the rest of the Penguins games, so goes the winner of the atlantic.
If Flyers Sweep the last 2 games with the Penguins, Flyers will win the Atlantic.
If Penguins win the last 2, Penguins win the Atlantic.
If they split, the Rangers will win the Atlantic... |
