Look where Shaw's stick is in the still frame of the video. On the ice, going for the puck! When he misses the puck, he brings his arms in to his body and appears to try to make himself small and squeeze by Smith to avoid contact. He didn't, and as a result, the punishment he's getting is nonsense! I wouldn't have minded a game, or time served, but 3 is ludacris!
Hagelin: Rookie, elbow to the head, first time offense: 3 games
Carkner: Assault on a player defenseless on the ice, multiple offender: 1 game
Asham: Cross check to head, multiple offender: 4 games
Backstrom: Cross check to the head, match penalty, 1st time offender: 1 game (for the same dirty hit!)
This is why most fans in the NHL are pissed! I'm interested to see how Shammy blows this one!!! - nelli312
I at least think there is room for interpretation here. Its not a vicious head hunt leap off the ice and crush a guy. It didnt deserve 4 post season games. (Largest suspension under shanahan)
Hossa would've been on the ice for the 4 on 4, in which case, I will put the Hawks up against any other team in a 4 on 4. Hossa was not in there and that's of a big part how we lost 2-1. - Assman22
Funny you mention this assman, Toews did not see a shift of four on four. Kind of odd.
>Well said
>No other pro league protects its stars less than the NHL
>If I'm paying top dollar for a ticket, do I want to see Hossa or Torres?
>We're simpatico on the state of the NHL right now, it's barely a sport - SnapitUpstairs
If I'm paying top dollar for a ticket I would rather watch last year Art Ross trophy winner.
If the NHL, especially Bettman, since he was at the game, had any balls, the officiating crew of Ian Walsh and Stephen Walkom, should be told, "thanks for your services, but you won't be needed for the rest of these playoffs. They were absolutely atrocious last night. I know officials can't see everything and just like a player, can have a bad game from time to time. but they way they officiated that game last night was behind explanation. Ian Walsh is in the same category at Tim Peel. If you see either of those guys officiating a game you know one of the teams is gonna get f--ked and you just have to hope it's the other team and not yours. - RetiredGoalie
The game really had the feeling of an ECHL game not an NHL playoff game.

Clearly Shaw was in the wrong. He should have stopped before contact, grabbed Smith by the head, and slammed his face into the boards. $2500, done. - Ogilthorpe2
Don't want to beat a dead horse here.....but take a look at a similar play on Smith earlier in the year. He flops and flails like a fish when hit. Look familiar? Oh and take a look at the 20 second mark. He was about to get up and get back in the net to attempt to make a save, well the whistle blows and he flops back down again in "agony" Smith has done this before
I would be mad, but I would expect the Blues player to be suspended if he hit Niemi in the head.
And please don't compare Shaw to Backes or Oshie. - carcus
If Shaw had gotten one game, I'd have been ticked, but I'd say okay fine because even though I didn't think it was intentional he was playing reckless and should have know better. Three games was a joke. And try reading before making a dumb statement like don't compare Shaw to Backes or Oshie. Did i say anywhere that I was comparing those players? I was simply pointing out that if any of the Blues better players had that happen to them you'd be upset. And what does that have to do with it anyway? What, Oshie and Backes are such superstars that they are beyond getting suspend under the same situation.

Apparently Shanny and his toadies don't have the ability to freeze frame on their video equipment. Too bad.

None of them are perfect. Some are better than others.
I hated McCreary with every fiber of my being. Peel is terrible. Auger is awful. I never minded McGeough, Van Massenhoven or Stewart. One of the new guys, St. Pierre, is quite good in my estimation.
I still have no clue why a goalie should get any extra protection over anyone else when he's playing the puck outside the crease. Makes exactly zero sense. - Ogilthorpe2
I guess the goalies cranium is of higher value than the guys drilled by Neal or Nibitz! BTW Neal one game? Why cuz like Weber he is star player who just happened to score 40 this year!!

He skated right into the path of the Jets skater, who (like Shaw, IMO) made an effort to avoid the hit.
Smith seems to like to put himself into dangerous situation looking to get hit and draw penalties (and suspensions?).
Against Shaw, he just stood there, as if waiting for the hit.

Hard to respect Smith the way he carries on. Would have loved to hear what Crawford said to him last night. Also would have loved to hear what Emery might have said to the players laughing on PHX bench.
