agree with ya...good memories and everything, but seriously this pisses me off...he has put himself above the team and now he just comes across as a douche....
have fun in year off....although timing of this is suspect to me....see what happens... - busher
If what's suspected is true and PC tried to off load him 2 years ago while he had a no trade clause and is again now, what exactly does he owe the team? If the team doesn't want him any more and he doesn't want to play somewhere else, or even just wants to control where he ends up, why not take the year off?

meh...players are asked to waive their nmc or ntc clauses all the time...he is taken it personal which is his choice...why not just get Chia to arrange a trade if Thomas is annoyed? Bruins gave him the chance and he won a cup for us which is great...Why (frank) up that goodwill?
Good luck playing on the Olympic team with the top goalies the US has...
I still think this whole thing is BS and timing is suspect...just seems stinky to me...

He definitely has an odd approach to handling things, he's a total nut. And I get being pissed if he's using it as leverage, but its business, if he's willing to walk away rather than go somewhere he doesn't want to and he's got other things he'd rather do and $ in the bank then go for it.
I think though for me, if it didn't happen to be for the 35+ rules, no one would be calling him selfish or have an issue with it at all. Timmy being Timmy, thanks for the memories, see you later. But because the team (one that for a second time is ready to push him out the door) gets screwed on the cap, he's condemned for it, and that's not his fault.

That's a Harvard issue, not a timmay issue. PC didn't understand the rule.
Trade him to PHX so they can hit the cap floor...or the Islanders since they collect goalies
Timmy's being a jackass and screwing the team that gave him the chance. 3 f's my (frank)ing ass, grow the (frank) up. And again, he didn't win the (frank)ing Cup by himself.

they're equally screwed if he just retired. - Fountain-San
right, they are better off with this scenario vs him retiring. even if he takes a year off the contract $3mm paid and $5mm against cap is still valid and that is a hell of a deal for tim thomas so someone will want that contract in a trade.
One thing I want to get straight......if we hang onto him, and he becomes our goalie again next year, does the same 5 million dollar cap hit count for 2013-2014 even though it counts for 2012-2013? If so, then something is majorly f-ed up in the CBA

Too much.
Would have done 3 - 3.25 max for Jones ... - JS1
Reminds me of our deal with Ryder in '08. Too much but fits a need on the team. They have the scratch to toss around and takes the pressure off the young guys but yes still a PCesque overpayment.
If David Jones getting $4 million a year is an indication as to how this free agency is going to go, I would stay the hell out of free agency.
I want to throw another angle at the Timmy trade thing out. What if we traded Timmy for a player with a year left on his deal that another team might not want that might be a need for us. First player that comes to mind is Morrow in Dallas. Salaries are almost the same. Dallas would save actual money by not paying Timmy. We get a guy that could help us out some. This is unless we can get some team to take Timmy's salary to get to cap floor.
A guy like Krejci could be hot in this market. Teams like Phoenix and Nashville are looking for a top flight center. Another thing I would do is if and when Kelly goes, I make Peverly the 3rd line center and go get a wing. I like Pevs at center more than the wing. Good on the face off dot, good vision, good passer, good 2 way player.

Exactly. I can only imagine what a center like Kelly will command in light of this Jones deal. I am more then happy with Peverley as our third line center and very happy with his deal now that we know what we are in for in free agency.

Kelly probably gets 4.5 to 5 for 4 years on the open market.
He's no longer chasing a cup, I bet he takes the cash.
thanks for the effort, but that's too rich for my blood. Hell, I'd resign Rolston at a deep discount and have him fill the void on the 3rd line.
I like the Timmay trade idea. NYI/PHX/FLA are always trying to hit the cap floor. They save money by not paying him a dime
