Bruins may sit winger Milan Lucic down vs. Penguins
By Mike Loftus
For the first time since Monday, hockey was the major topic during and after today's Bruins' practice.
The chatter wasn't entirely positive.
Many players were asked about Friday's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the teams' first meeting since Jarome Iginla made an 11th-hour decision to veto a trade to Boston.
Even more buzz, however, was generated by the sight of Milan Lucic in a green practice jersey, skating on a line with Jay Pandolfo and Kaspars Daugavins. The B's, who broke out the green jerseys once they reached three extra forwards on their roster, have basically given them to players they don't expect to use in games. Lucic, therefore, is very likely headed for a DNP on Friday.
Neither Lucic, who has scored only six goals this season -- two in the last 27 games -- nor coach Claude Julien ducked the issue.
Here's Lucic, who said he "wouldn't blame anyone but myself" is Julien decides not to use him:
"You can’t just keep making excuses and saying all these things and pointing fingers and stuff like that. You’ve got to try to work yourself through it. It’s times like this where if you get through it, that kind of make you stronger as a person and as a player.
"That’s where I’m at right now. You want to try to get through it to try to make you stronger, because you want to contribute for your team, you want to contribute for your teammates, you want to contribute for the fans and the city.
"I’ve taken pride in trying to be a big part of this team, and right now, it sucks because you haven’t had that same effect that you know you can bring."
And here's Julien: "You saw where he was this morning, and it indicates he may not play tomorrow. I haven’t decided that yet.
"We’ve had our chats about his game for a while now. He’s really trying to turn the corner, but doesn’t seem to be able to ... We can support him and give him opportunities, but at the end of the day, you have to be able to step up there, and he knows he’s not.
"We also know what he’s done for this team in the past and what he’s capable of doing. You’ve just got to hope that this player finds his game, because we’re going to need him.
- The most likely replacement for Lucic is Carl Soderberg, the Swedish forward who joined the team on Wednesday for the morning skate and pre-game warm-ups, and practiced for the first time today. Soderberg, normally a center, skated at left wing on a line with center Chris Kelly and right wing Jaromir Jagr.
"I’ve been thinking of this for a while. I’m really excited to be here, and hopefully I’ll play tomorrow," said Soderberg, who was understandably intrigued by the line he skated with: "Of course, it's awesome" to skate with Jagr, Soderberg said, "and Kelly's a great player, too. He had two points yesterday (goal and an assist, vs. Buffalo), so he's hot. Hopefully I can fit in there."
- The other three lines at practice (L-C-R) were Brad Marchand-Patrice Bergeron-Tyler Seguin; Dan Paille-David Krejci-Nathan Horton and Gregory Campbell-Rich Peverley-Shawn Thornton.

Not much else left to do. Hopefully this kicks him in the ass ... but I have the feeling he just wasn't well enough prepared for the season and he's going to need the off-season to get his conditioning and game back to where they need to be. He should go get Gary Roberts-ed |

Just hoping Looch isn't the only one ultimately held accountable ... But he's a great start

I think they still play lucic but they let him think he is sitting and throw him in last minute to see if that motivates him. First shift if he doesn't go out and pick a fight with murray, england or iginla or barrel someone over then he'll sit the following game and might not get back in. We'll see. Lots of healthy bodies and yeti probably getting the nod. |
